She Died With My Name on Her Lips novel Chapter 14

“This bracelet means something different. No matter the cost, no matter how much work it takes, I just want to fix it,” Stephen said, his voice steady and sure.

He’d already let Louisa down more times than he could count. Even this bracelet was another mark against him, another way he’d failed her. If he died and had to face her—and both their families—what would he even say?

So, whatever it took, he was determined to make things right.

Mr. Turner didn’t try to talk him out of it anymore. He just nodded and said, “I’ll do my best.”

Then he took the bracelet into his workshop, calling his assistants over to discuss how they’d repair it. Honestly, his earlier hesitation had only been a test—to see if Stephen truly cared.

Plenty of people had come to him, some genuinely desperate to restore their treasures, others not really bothered. If someone didn’t seem to care, he’d usually hand them off to his assistants. Only the ones who truly valued what they’d lost got his personal attention.

After leaving the Turners, Stephen barely had a moment to breathe before a thin girl in a white dress suddenly ran out in front of the car. The driver’s eyes went wide and he slammed on the brakes, stopping just half a meter from Louise.

“Stephen, please, don’t make me leave you,” Louise cried, her voice raw. “I’m begging you, let me stay.”

“I promise, I’ll never try to have your child again. But I look so much like Ms. Thompson—now that she’s gone, I can keep pretending to be her. Isn’t it good, seeing me and thinking of her?”

“I swear, I’ll never even think about anyone else. I’ll do anything—whatever you tell me, I’ll do it. Just don’t send me away. Please, I’m begging you!”

She was pressed against the car door, tears streaming down her face. When Stephen didn’t respond, she dropped all her pride and fell to her knees on the pavement.

“Stephen, I can’t survive without you. My parents and brother—they’ll ruin me. They want to sell me off to some stranger for cash. Please, let me stay with you. I don’t care about your money or your cards. I just want to stay by your side!”
