Paul Alba could only watch as every last bit of hope faded from his eyes.
Across the room, Louise’s younger brother, Tim, finally realized what was happening. He dropped his game controller and ran to block the movers.
“Do you have any idea whose house this is? That’s my sister you’re messing with! And my brother-in-law is Stephen Barker—yeah, that Stephen Barker! If you touch our stuff, you’ll regret it!”
He frantically tried to shield their valuables, yelling threats he barely believed himself.
But the movers just looked at him, cold and unimpressed. “Brother-in-law? Mr. Barker isn’t your brother-in-law. He only has one wife—Miss Louisa Thompson.”
“And for the record, we’re here because Mr. Barker told us to be. You can’t stop us.”
Tim froze, stunned. He watched helplessly as one of the movers unplugged his expensive computer and started hauling it away. That was it—he snapped, rushing forward to throw a punch.
The mover caught his fist with barely any effort and shoved him hard. Tim hit the floor, groaning in pain.
The house was a disaster. Anything that didn’t rightfully belong to the Sharps was packed up and carried out.
Louise and Paul Alba just sat there, empty-eyed and defeated.
Louise’s voice broke the silence. “Stephen, why are you doing this to us? You have more money than you could ever spend. And that money—it was what you gave me for being your stand-in. How can you just take it back? What did I do wrong?”
Stephen didn’t even blink. “I warned you from the start—this was a contract, nothing more. You were just here to get a reaction out of Louisa. But you went too far. You tried to hurt her. That’s on you.”
“You wanted to destStephen everything Louisa loved, so now I’m taking away everything you care about.”
“You love money so much? Fine. Let your whole family go back to where you started. And remember, this is all because of you.”
