The group looked at each other, faces full of confusion, until Maya finally asked, “What do you mean, ‘draw him in’? Shawn isn’t just anybody—he doesn’t care if it’s a guy or a girl, he’ll throw a punch all the same. Are you saying she’s trying to get close to him?”
Ayla nodded, and the girls huddled together, voices barely above a whisper. “Exactly. You know what they say—no risk, no reward. Shawn’s seen it all, but I bet no one’s ever stood up to him like that before. The way she acted? She got his attention, didn’t she?”
Hannah’s eyes lit up as realization dawned. “I get it—playing hard to get so Shawn gets even more obsessed with her. She’s provoked him twice now, and both times he let her off the hook. That’s not normal for him.”
“Some girls have no shame,” Lacy spat, glaring daggers at the figure ahead of them. “Scheming every which way to seduce a guy, hoping to have the school’s top dog as her protector. Like she’s anything special—just some nobody from nowhere. She puts on a designer outfit and thinks she’s a princess? What a joke.”
Lacy’s hands clenched with frustration, wishing she could march over and slap her. But she knew there was no way she’d win in a real fight, so she had to settle for running her mouth instead.
…
At Sutton Manor.
Celine lounged in her mother’s arms, playing up her sweetness as she admired a brand-new watch. “Thank you for the gift, Mom,” she said, her voice sugary.
Sommer tucked a strand of hair behind her daughter’s ear, her expression brimming with affection. “You don’t need to thank me, sweetheart. As long as you like it, that’s all that matters.”
When Sabrina came home, the two of them fell silent in perfect sync.
Celine made a show of hiding her watch behind her back, pausing dramatically as Sabrina entered the room before finally tucking it away.
But Sabrina didn’t spare her even a glance.
Celine’s little performance was all to flaunt just how much Sommer adored her—a mother who would drop a fortune on a luxury watch. It was a pointed message: So what if you’re the biological daughter? Mom loves me more, and nothing you do will change that.
