Octavia hadn’t expected her granddaughter to ask such a question.
She hesitated, caught off guard, then managed a faint smile.
Octavia could tell that Sabrina was a sincere, straightforward girl—unlike her other two granddaughters, who always seemed to be scheming behind people’s backs.
For a moment, she debated whether or not to share the truth with Sabrina. If Sabrina found out, would she hold a grudge? After weighing it over, Octavia decided it was time to finally reveal the secret she’d kept buried for so many years.
Sabrina was nearly an adult. She deserved to know.
Octavia gestured for Sabrina to come closer, then glanced at Marina. Marina understood immediately; she left the room, quietly closing the door and waiting outside.
Sabrina realized whatever her grandmother was about to say was not meant for other ears. She didn’t press for answers, just sat quietly, waiting for Octavia to speak.
Octavia’s thoughts drifted back to a decade and a half ago.
Desmond and Sommer had been married for three years, yet Sommer’s belly had shown no sign of a child. They’d both gone to the hospital for full checkups, but nothing seemed amiss.
Octavia was desperate for a grandchild, but there was nothing she could do.
Someone told her that the old church atop Verdant Peak was famous for its powerful prayers. Several women struggling to conceive had gone up there to pray and soon after found themselves expecting.
So Octavia brought Desmond and Sommer with her to Verdant Peak to pray for a child.
They even stayed there for three days.
And, like a miracle, it worked. The very next month, Sommer was pregnant.
Octavia was overjoyed. She could hardly wait to return to Verdant Peak to give thanks.
While on the mountain, she encountered a monk. At first, she hadn’t thought much of him, but he seemed to know everything about the Sutton family—even some of their most private matters.
