This was a devastating blow for the Yarrow Group—just when things couldn’t get any worse, the situation went from bad to catastrophic.
Their maximum bid was supposed to be thirty million dollars, but tonight’s events had spun completely out of control.
Two minutes ticked by.
Leonard still hadn’t made his decision, and Celia, as the host, had to step in.
“Mr. Yarrow, have you made up your mind? Please decide within the next minute, or we’ll consider it a forfeit.”
Leonard hesitated, still wavering. Celia turned with a smile and addressed Bryce.
“Mr. York, please hold on just a moment.”
The minute passed.
Celia raised her voice.
“I declare—”
“Wait, I accept Mr. York’s terms.”
Leonard cut her off before she could finish.
He had no other choice.
If the Yarrow family wanted a powerful ally, they’d have to pay the price.
Leonard trusted his own skills—very few people in Port City could beat him at the tables.
With the Yarrow Group’s finances on the brink, if he didn’t find a backer, it was over. He might as well take this last gamble.
The terms gave them two options: cards or dice.
Bryce could see Leonard’s agitation—he was already feeling sorry for him.
He hadn’t even come here to win big, but luck had dropped a fortune into his lap.
And he was loving every minute of it.
“So, what do you want to play?”
Leonard exhaled and settled back into his chair, a flicker of determination flashing in his eyes.
“Cards.”
At the Siren’s Club, there was a house rule: no matter the game, it came down to a single round. Winner takes all.
With so many people waiting to play, it was the only way to keep things moving.
Bryce gave Leonard a knowing look.
“Alright, you deal first.”
Leonard quickly composed himself.
Cards were his specialty; he didn’t doubt for a moment that he would win.
One round. All or nothing.
Both players would shuffle once, and then the dealer would shuffle a final time.
On the big screen, both players’ hands were perfectly clear.
Everyone present was convinced Leonard had it in the bag.
There was barely any suspense left.
When the third card came down, Bryce’s face didn’t change.
He calmly reached up and unfastened the top button of his shirt.
Maybe everyone thought he was just making a show of desperation, sure the game was already lost.
Leonard was secretly elated. With the York family behind him, the Yarrow name would finally have a place in Port City.
Bryce glanced across at Leonard, who was already basking in victory, and a hint of irony flickered in his eyes.
“Show.”
They flipped their third cards at the same time. The first ones to react were Celia and Xander, both stunned.
“Oh my God! That’s incredible, Mr. York, how did you even do that?”
There it was.
The third card: Queen of Clubs.
Bryce’s hand: Ten, Jack, Queen—straight.
No one saw that coming.
