“Deal,” Sabrina agreed, sealing her decision with a nod.
She accepted Samuel’s proposal, eager to bring this high-stakes game to a swift conclusion.
No more words were necessary—the match began.
A waiter set a brand-new deck of cards on the table.
Samuel gestured gallantly. “Ladies first. You shuffle for the first round.”
Sabrina didn’t hesitate. It didn’t matter who shuffled; this was a game she had to win.
She picked up the cards, her fingers moving deftly between them—confident, unhurried, as if she had the outcome already mapped out in her mind. The cards danced at her fingertips, each movement purposeful, every touch precise. Her technique was effortless, almost elegant.
All eyes from the VIP lounge were glued to her. For someone so young, her shuffling was flawless—no wonder she’d dared to challenge Samuel.
Even Samuel, watching her skilled hands, felt a pang of surprise. She hadn’t come unprepared. Still, he trusted his own talent—no one in this city could rival his skill at the table.
The cards were shuffled and the first hand dealt.
Sabrina didn’t glance at her cards. She already knew her first was a King of Spades.
Samuel, too, ignored his hand, his gaze fixed on the young woman across from him.
Only when the third card landed did they both pick up their hands.
Sabrina revealed three Kings. Samuel turned over three Queens.
For a moment, no one noticed the flicker of disappointment, quickly replaced by delight, on Samuel’s face.
Celia found her voice and exclaimed, “Congratulations, Ms. Sutton! First round goes to you!”
Cheers erupted from the crowd. No one ever beat Samuel—until now.
He dealt the second hand.
Three cards down; neither player bothered with theatrics this time. They flipped their hands over simultaneously.
Sabrina: two Queens and a nine.
Samuel: two Kings and a nine.
As Celia and Xander cried out in excitement, the room erupted. The score was tied. Samuel had narrowly taken this round.
He glanced again at the girl across from him, unable to shake his growing curiosity. No one had ever matched him before.
Round three. The final shuffle.
The waiter’s hands trembled; he’d been working here for years, but never imagined he’d be shuffling cards for the Gambling Deity himself.
