Chapter 468
A free opportunity is still an opportunity. There was no reason not to take it.
After exchanging a few words with her friends and giving Wendy some quick instructions, Sharon headed to the performance
venue.
Once there, it didn’t take long for her to realize what kind of event this really was.
The entire performance had been put together for Kelly. Sponsored exclusively by the Biggs and Hendricks families, the stage was Kelly’s alone. Everyone else was just there to make her shine brighter.
Sharon had seen this coming. When someone else foots the bill, the spotlight doesn’t land by accident.
She was just about to find Kelly when someone in the crowd shouted, “Kelly is hurt!”
Chaos erupted in the rehearsal hall.
Sharon quickly asked what had happened. Apparently, during the curtain call rehearsal, a female pianist had accidentally stepped on the long train of Kelly’s skirt. Kelly had fallen and scraped her knee.
Nate glared at the stunned pianist, his voice sharp and accusing. “You did that on purpose, didn’t you? You kept messing up during rehearsal this morning too, making Kelly go over things again and again. You knew she wasn’t feeling well, and you targeted her on purpose!”
The pianist looked shocked. “But Kelly was clearly off today. It had nothing to do with me. She’s the one who said she wanted it perfect and asked to redo it…”
Nate wasn’t interested in hearing it. “Just because Kelly’s professional doesn’t mean you get to take advantage of her!”
“I wasn’t! I swear, I wasn’t trying to target her. Why would I? I have no reason to-”
Nate let out a cold laugh. “No reason? Everyone here knows the moment Carter walks in, you rush over to him like a moth to a flame. Throwing yourself at someone else’s man right in front of his fiancée is just downright shameless.”
At that moment, a calm voice cut through the noise. “What’s going on here?”
Nate turned, and the moment he saw Carter, his whole demeanor sharpened, like a dog finally seeing its master. He quickly launched into a dramatic retelling, painting the pianist as someone who had nearly sabotaged the entire show on purpose.
“Carter, just look. Kelly’s leg is still bruised!”
“I’m fine…” Kelly’s face was a little pale. “Rita didn’t mean to…”
Nate looked at her injury, his expression tight with concern. “Kelly, you’re too kind. Anyone can see she did it on purpose. With that much space, how could she step right on your skirt unless she meant to?”
Carter simply walked over, scooped Kelly into his arms, and gave a quiet order, “Replace the pianist.”
The woman’s eyes widened, stunned. She looked like she might cry.
“Mr. Biggs, please… I didn’t do it on purpose. Just give me one more chance.”
His voice was low and cold. “Move. Don’t make me say it again.”
Someone stepped in and quickly pulled the pianist aside, clearing a path.
After Carter left, the same person leaned toward Rita Meier and said in a hushed voice, “They’re just replacing you, that’s all. You can still audition for other shows. But if you piss off Mr. Biggs, you might never work in this industry again.”

The pianist broke down, crying hard. “I spent four months competing for this. Four months. And I earned my spot… I never targeted Kelly. Who here would even dare?”
The other person sighed. “You’re right. You didn’t target her. But remember that time you handed Mr. Biggs a bottle of water? That probably didn’t sit well with someone.”
The pianist wiped her tears. “It was just courtesy… and I gave Kelly a bottle too. I wasn’t flirting. I wouldn’t.”
“I believe you. But it’s not about what you meant. Someone didn’t like it. Just bad luck, I guess.”
The performance hadn’t even begun, and already the carefully selected, highly vetted pianist had been cut. The rehearsal hall buzzed with whispers and unease.
