Chapter 538
Carter’s cold, critical gaze fell on Thomas.
“Sharon, is he the reason you kept hanging up on me?”
Sharon responded calmly, “Jumping to blame everyone else the second things go south-is that what being CEO of Biggs Group teaches you?”
Carter’s voice turned sharper. “Oh, so you’re telling me ditching your kidnapped kid for a date is perfectly acceptable?”
Thomas smiled faintly at that. “Though it’s not my place to interfere in someone else’s affairs, I’ve always had a problem with injustice. So I feel compelled to clarify on Sharon’s behalf: I’m not her date. She accidentally bumped into me yesterday and simply took me to see a doctor. Without asking for any explanation, you jumped to conclusions and accused her-”
He paused awhile, then continued, “Sir, are you her husband?”
It was meant as a well-meaning defense, but to Carter, the words grated unpleasantly.
Sharon replied flatly, “Ex-husband.”
Thomas’s expression shifted with sudden understanding. “Ah, I see… If you’re her ex-husband, then perhaps you’re overstepping. You’re divorced. Who she chooses to see is no longer your concern.”
Carter’s eyes darkened. “Sharon, Theo’s life is hanging in the balance. Are you really going to stand here and keep arguing with me?”
Sharon said nothing. She moved to open the rear door, intending to get in, but Thomas was quicker. He slipped inside before
she could.
She froze, caught off guard.
Thomas looked up at her with a bright smile. “Thanks.”
Sharon parted her lips, but ultimately said nothing.
Carter’s jaw tightened, his handsome face clouded with displeasure. But with Theo missing, he couldn’t afford to waste time.
He snapped coldly at Sharon, “Get in the front.”
Not wanting to create more conflict at a time like this, Sharon shut the rear door and took the front passenger seat.
Carter stared straight ahead, expression frosty. 1
“Seatbelt.”
Once she fastened it, the car shot forward like an arrow loosed from a bow.
To her surprise, Sharon noticed that all traces of Kelly’s presence in the car were gone. Even the custom seat sticker on the passenger side had vanished.
She glanced at it briefly, then looked away, indifferent.
“What exactly happened?” she asked. “How did Theo get kidnapped? Do you know who did it?”
Carter’s voice was low and composed. “It happened about an hour ago. We’re still investigating the kidnappers’ identities. They were extremely meticulous-well-prepared, and they acted in blind spots beyond the reach of surveillance. It’ll take time to pin
them down.”
Sharon’s expression was grim. “Have they contacted you?”

“Not yet.”
“Any leads?”
“None so far.”
The fact that Carter discovered the kidnapping just an hour after it happened was already impressively fast. It was possible the kidnappers hadn’t even realized their actions had been exposed.
A trace of anxiety crept into Sharon’s brows.
If they were after money, it would be manageable.
But if this stemmed from revenge…
She didn’t dare finish the thought. Her chest tightened with dread.
Sensing her worry, Carter glanced sideways at her and, uncharacteristically, tried to reassure her.
“Sharon, Julliard and I have already dispatched our men. Theo will be fine.”
His words snapped her out of her spiral.
Right. Why hadn’t she thought of calling for help?
With that, Sharon immediately dialed Xavier’s number.
