I asked a real estate agent to list the house online.
The agent asked if I needed time to pack up my belongings.
I glanced back at the crooked family portrait Len had drawn, still taped to the wall.
Six years of memories living with the father and son flashed before my eyes.
“No need. Just call someone to haul it all away as junk.”
I didn’t
I didn’t want them anymore, and I didn’t want this so–called home either.
I’d left myself one day to handle the house business, but got a call from my son’s preschool in the middle of it.
“Leo’s mom, we’ve been trying to reach you! There’s a parent–child sports day this afternoon. Can you make it?”
“You’ve missed the last few events, and this sports day’s final activity is a three–legged race that requires both parents to participate with their child. So…”
Usually I was so busy working multiple nanny jobs that I worked around the clock, and I rarely answered unknown calls.
After a moment of silence, I agreed: “Okay.”
As soon as I entered the playground, I heard a kid asking Leo: “Is your mom really coming?”
He lifted his little face with obvious pride: “Of course she is! My mom is the most amazing person in the world!”
His childish words made my nose sting–I never dared imagine he’d say something like that..
I frantically patted down my jacket that smelled of cleaning supplies, trying to make myself look more presentable.
Gathering courage, I called out: “Leo, mommy’s here.”
I was lost in the warmth of our reunion and didn’t notice the flash of terror in his eyes.
Just as I was about to take his hand, a kid nearby asked: “Leo Evans, is this your mom?”
He stammered without answering.
That’s when Isabella walked in wearing a Chanel suit, calling out softly: “Leo.”
Leo immediately pulled his hand away from mine and threw himself into Isabella’s arms: “She’s my real mom!”
“You disgusting person, get away from me!”

Chapter 2
“I don’t know you!”
My heart felt like it had been pierced by an ice plek.
Disgusting.
A massive chill shot up from my feet, and my outstretched hand froze in mid–air.
So when he said “most amazing,” he wasn’t talking about me.
The other parents gathered around, pointing and whispering:
“Where did this person come from? Something’s not right–could be a predator.”
“Coming to a preschool dressed like that, she’ll scare the children!”
“I bet she stole something from us. I demand a body search.”
The crowd was practically ready to tear the clothes off my back.

But Isabella spoke up with fake sympathy:
“Everyone calm down. She’s just a nanny–it’s hard work. Don’t give her a hard time,”
At those words, everyone backed away like I was carrying a disease.
“No wonder she looks so shabby–how embarrassing!”
“My child has a competition today. Don’t let her ruin the atmosphere!”
Someone threw an apple core at me first, then rubber balls and building blocks came flying-
An X–acto knife grazed my arm as it flew past. I saw my son Leo–the one I’d worried about for six years–glaring at me. with clenched teeth.
Instinctively, I covered my face with my sleeve as the smell of blood mixed with disinfectant filled my
nostrils.
Alexander arrived a step too late, pulled me behind him, and apologized repeatedly to the crowd:
“I’m so sorry–this is our housekeeper. She has some mental issues. Sorry for the trouble.”
He bowed with sincere humility, but when his eyes swept over me, they were ice–cold.
The blood on the ground made the parents go silent instantly–no one dared make more trouble.
Alexander grabbed my arm and dragged me toward the exit, gripping so hard it felt like he might crush my bones.
He demanded to know why I’d come without his permissi
