Before I could finish, Alexander looked at me with utter disappointment. “Do you know how many people will talk behind Leo’s back when word gets out that his mother works as a nanny for multiple families?”
“It’s just a parent–child sports day, Lydin–why did you have to come and cause trouble!”
1 looked at his perfectly pressed suit, then at Isabella in the distance wearing designer clothes, her makeup flawless like a store mannequin.
My cheeks burned with shame, a stark reminder of how much I’d humiliated myself.
Suddenly I felt completely exhausted.
“I wasn’t the one who brought up my work.”
Alexander let out a cold laugh. “Isabella was trying to protect you from getting hurt–she only slipped up because she was worried,”
“Are you going to hold a grudge against her too?”
I
What I really wanted to ask was whether he truly thought my work was shameful, something dirty.
Alexander gave me my answer the next second: “Taking care of other people’s kids for a living–have you lost all sense of dignity?”
The undisguised contempt in his eyes.
But six years ago when Leo was diagnosed, Alexander was the one who used his connections to find me nanny work, encouraging me:
“There’s no shame in honest work. Earning money for our son’s treatment is what matters most.”
“Leo and I will always be proud of you.”
Now they were the ones who looked down on me.
I slowly wiped away the blood from the corner of my mouth.
No amount of explanation would help, because he was convinced I’d done this on purpose.
Why humiliate myself further.
I looked straight into his eyes: “Why should I feel undignified? I’ve never thought my work was shameful.”
Making money with my own hands, not stealing or cheating.

Chapter 3
I had nothing to be ashamed of.
In six years I’d worked for countless families, witnessed so much struggle and hardship.
From those first sleepless nights to my current calm composure, every dollar was earned through blood and sweat.
Alexander called me “hopeless,” his brow carrying unmistakable arrogance: “I think your greed has made you lose all
shame.”
Of course he had no idea how I worried about money every single day.
From three thousand to ten thousand to fifty thousand–the medical bills snowballed bigger and bigger.
I’d hesitate for ages over buying a bottle of water, ultimately just swallowing my saliva and walking away.
The veteran caregivers at the agencies took pity on me and would slip me sandwiches.
Even the tip envelopes that families dropped on the floor–I had to bend down and pick them up, because that money could buy Leo’s medication for three days.
I couldn’t bear to see Leo suffer through his condition, couldn’t stand Alexander’s daily sighs of worry.
But the people I cared about most were the ones most willing to hurt me.
They fed off my flesh and blood, then had the nerve to ask why my spine was getting more bent.
Since I was leaving anyway, what he thought of me didn’t matter anymore.
“Yes, I love money so much I’ll throw away my dignity for it.”
Isabella suddenly spoke up, her voice full of fake concern:
“Lydia, your selfishness is one thing, but today you turned the sports day into complete chaos. Do you know how much we’ll have to pay in damages?”
“And that hundred and fifty thousand for Leo’s surgery–when exactly are you planning to pay it?”
She acted so righteous, as if I were spending her family’s money.
Looking at this woman who used to call me sister, I felt nothing but disgust.
After moving to this city, I’d thought Isabella was a true friend.
It suddenly started raining. Isabella barely coughed once before Alexander immediately opened the car door for her to get out of the rain.
When he turned back to me. his face showed nothing but impatience: “Do you have to put on this pitiful victim act?”
He stepped forward to grab my wrist, but 1 jerked back:
