“Sunny, look at this! The internet’s having a field day.” Lily Williams grinned as she scrolled through her phone. “Isn’t this the girl everyone says is Mr. Lawson’s secret flame? Poor thing—just look at her, apologizing like she’s facing a firing squad. Who did she piss off this time?”
“And the person she’s apologizing to has the last name Carrington, too,” Lily added, waggling her eyebrows.
Wyatt Glenn, Sunny’s mentor, appeared in the doorway, studying her with a curious look. “Sunny, come into my office for a minute.”
She had a pretty good idea what he wanted. “You wanted to see me, boss?”
Wyatt got straight to the point. “You’ve seen the headlines?”
“I have.”
He looked her over, trying to gauge her reaction. She seemed far too calm for his liking, but he had to ask, “So, that public apology the mistress posted—when she mentioned Ms. Carrington, was she talking about you?”
Sunny didn’t bother to act coy. “She was.”
Wyatt’s lips twitched in surprise. He shot her a thumbs-up. “Impressive!”
Yet, as far as he knew, the only one backing his protégé was Manager Pierce. Since when did Jude Pierce have enough clout to go up against the CEO’s nephew?
Sunny didn’t elaborate. “Don’t worry, boss. She won’t be bothering me again.”
“At least not openly,” Wyatt said, nodding. “But you know how these things go—just keep your wits about you.”
Sunny flashed a calm smile. Luna’s tricks were obvious enough, but she had all the time in the world to play along.
“As long as you know what you’re doing,” Wyatt said, a touch of concern in his voice. “I just don’t want to see you get burned.”
He hesitated, then added, “You free tonight? There’s a new place in town—I thought I’d introduce you to a few colleagues over dinner. Good way to make some connections.”
When her mentor asked, Sunny never refused. She knew how much Wyatt looked out for her, always seizing any chance to help her network within the legal community. Building relationships didn’t happen overnight.
So, when Stellan’s invitation came in, she politely declined. She’d left early today, deliberately avoiding any chance of running into him.
She decided she’d spend the night at her own little apartment. After every intimate moment with him, she needed some space to clear her head.
A restless heart calms down in solitude, and when it does, it’s less likely to get lost in someone else.
Meanwhile, Stellan spent his days thinking up ways to break through her defenses.
