Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 405

Sarah Brown didn’t even give her a chance to ask. She put on her best “I’m-so-busy” face and waved her hand in a rush. “Oh gosh, if I don’t leave right now, I’m gonna be late! You two carry on—I’ll see you later!”

Before Camila Davis could even react, Sarah was already halfway down the hallway, practically speed-walking away.

Camila just stared after her, a bit dumbfounded by how smooth her exit was. Did Sarah really have somewhere to be…?

Dennis Williams watched Sarah disappear, raising an eyebrow but saying nothing. He looked back at Camila and asked casually, “Shall we head out together?”

At this point, it would’ve been awkward to refuse again, so Camila just nodded and smiled. “Sure.”

She felt a little relieved, honestly. The painting was already bought, the paperwork was done, and she’d paid for it. If she’d been a minute slower and Mr. Williams had caught her in the act, that would’ve been so embarrassing.

Soon enough, the two of them—plus little Lillian—headed into the next half of the gallery.

Camila reached down to take her daughter’s hand and asked in her gentlest voice, “Lillian, you weren’t any trouble for Mr. Williams, were you?”

Lillian shook her head, her voice as sweet as ever. “Nope! I was super good!”

She took a big sip from her little pink water bottle, her cheeks puffing out like a baby chipmunk, which made Camila smile and poke her gently on the cheek.

Once the three of them had disappeared around a corner, Sarah peeked out from behind a marble column, grinning to herself. Genius move! She’d just given those two the perfect opportunity to get closer.

A little ways off, Aaron and the security guys watched Sarah’s sneaky maneuvers. Aaron called out, “Ms. Brown, didn’t you have somewhere to be?”

Sarah jumped at his sudden voice, spinning around. When she saw it was Aaron, she put a hand over her heart and complained, “Could you not sneak up on people like that? You nearly gave me a heart attack!”

Aaron didn’t look fazed. “We’ve been here the whole time—keeping an eye on things.”

Sarah was completely unfazed, too. “Well, then just pretend you didn’t see anything, alright?”

She was about to wander off when Aaron offered, “Why don’t you join us, Ms. Brown? There’s a bunch of us, and we’re already keeping tabs on Mr. Williams and Ms. Davis. That way, you won’t accidentally bump into them.”

Sarah’s eyes widened. So they were all in on the same mission? Even better!

She gave Aaron a high-five, and the two of them set off to see the art together. The security guys exchanged glances—maybe they needed to work on their people skills in the future.

Meanwhile, Camila was blissfully unaware of all this. She was just enjoying the exhibition with Dennis and Lillian.
