Little Lillian didn’t quite understand money—at least, not really. But she did know one thing: Mommy had to work hard to earn it, and she didn’t want Mommy to be tired.
She thought for a moment, her tiny hand wrapped in her mother’s, and piped up in her sweet, childlike voice, “How about… when I’m grown up and have my own money, I’ll buy this painting myself?”
Camila Davis felt her heart just melt at her daughter’s words.
Gently ruffling Lillian’s soft hair, she laughed, “It’s alright, honey. If you really like it, Mommy will buy it for you. I’ve got a little extra cash right now—don’t you worry.”
As she said this, Camila glanced around for a gallery staff member and called out, “Excuse me—”
But before she could finish, a young voice interrupted from behind.
“Dad, can I buy this painting?”
That voice was awfully familiar.
Wait a second… wasn’t that Sandra Taylor’s son?
Camila’s smile faded and she turned around, almost on instinct. Sure enough, there they were—Sandra, her son Daniel, and Jordan Smith.
Daniel seemed to notice them too; he put on an overly surprised face. “Oh wow, Lillian, Camila! What a coincidence!”
Lillian’s little brow furrowed. She clearly wasn’t thrilled to see them, and edged closer to her mom.
Camila’s eyes narrowed. Honestly, she was getting tired of running into these people everywhere.
Why did they have to show up wherever they went?
She looked away, determined to ignore them for once.
But Jordan Smith didn’t let it go. “You’re here to buy a painting for Lillian?” he asked, as if it wasn’t obvious.
Camila just kept quiet. She had no intention of answering.
Jordan seemed to pick up on her chilly mood, and his jaw tightened.
