He turned to the gallery manager and said, “Now that this is all settled, could you please take the painting down? We’ll be buying it.”
At those words, a shadow flickered in Jordan Smith’s eyes.
His face tightened as he stepped forward. “Lillian’s my daughter. Since she wants this painting, I’ll pay for it.”
Dennis Williams’s gaze landed on him—cool, calm, and unreadable.
Jordan met his eyes, and there was no mistaking the surge of hostility between them.
Both men were used to being in charge, their presence so commanding that everyone around them could feel the tension in the air—it was almost suffocating.
The gallery manager was at a complete loss.
Who were they supposed to give the painting to?
As the manager hesitated, Camila Davis stepped up.
Her tone was icy. “There’s no need, Mr. Smith. If Lillian wants something, I’ll buy it for her. If you never intended to give it to her in the first place, there’s no point in a last-minute gesture. It won’t make her happy. If you really care about her, don’t ruin what little good mood she has left.”
With that, Camila ignored the shock and irritation on Jordan’s face and addressed the gallery manager directly. “Could you please take the painting down for us? I’ll pay right away.”
“Of course, ma’am. Give me one moment,” the manager replied, finally relieved, and hurried off to get an assistant to remove the painting.
Camila turned away from Jordan and his group and looked at Dennis, her voice gentle. “We’ve got what we came for. Let’s go.”
Dennis gave a small nod, then reached down to take Lillian’s tiny hand.
Lillian didn’t shy away from him at all. In fact, she seemed at ease with Dennis, a striking contrast to how she’d hidden behind Camila when she saw Jordan earlier.
Jordan’s expression darkened as he watched them.
He couldn’t stand it anymore. Raising his voice, he called after Camila, “Camila Davis, don’t forget—I’m Lillian’s father!”
Camila stopped in her tracks.
She couldn’t help but think how ridiculous Jordan sounded. What was he trying to prove by saying this now?
When Lillian had needed her father most, Jordan had been distant, cold, ignoring her needs. Now, suddenly, he wanted to claim his title?
Did he even deserve it?
