Camila Davis almost lost her composure when she heard those words.
S-sleep together? Seriously?
Lillian, honey, don’t say things like that!
Camila’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
There was no way she could go along with little Lillian’s idea, so she tried to gently coax her instead, “Sweetie, how about you sleep with Mommy tonight, okay? You’re such a big girl now, and we don’t want to bother Daddy while he’s working…”
Usually, Lillian was pretty well-behaved and easy to reason with.
But tonight, she was unusually stubborn.
When Mommy refused to let Daddy put her to bed, Lillian clung tightly to Dennis Williams’ pant leg, refusing to let go. Her big blue eyes welled up with tears in seconds, and she gazed at them with a trembling lip, her little face turning red—enough to melt anyone’s heart.
“But I want Daddy! Daddy, please don’t go…”
Dennis had always had a soft spot for his little girl, and seeing her so upset completely undid him.
He knelt down to wipe her tears, his voice gentle, “Alright, I’ll stay. But first, how about you go take a bath, okay?”
Camila glanced at Dennis, surprised he agreed so quickly.
He didn’t bother explaining—just shot her a look, signaling that she should focus on calming Lillian down, and that he’d quietly leave after she fell asleep.
Camila understood. A wave of guilt and gratitude washed over her.
He really didn’t have to do any of this, not with his demanding job and all. But the way he always doted on Lillian, and the way he supported her, made her feel truly thankful—she just never knew how to say it.
Without another word, Camila crouched beside Lillian. “You’re Mommy’s clean little cupcake, right? Let’s go get you into the tub.”
Lillian wanted to be good, but she kept glancing back at Dennis, not entirely convinced. “Daddy, when I’m done, will you still be here?”
He smiled at her, “Of course. I’ll be right here on the couch. I’m not going anywhere, promise. When you’re done, I’ll tuck you in.”
That seemed to do the trick. Lillian finally let herself be led to the bathroom, though she kept peeking over her shoulder.
Susan, their housekeeper, came over with a set of Lillian’s pajamas to help.
Soon, Lillian was squeaky clean and scampering back out, smelling of baby shampoo and wearing her favorite bunny pajamas—the ones with floppy ears on the hood. Her cheeks were pink, and she looked so soft and cuddly, it was hard not to want to squish her.
First thing she did was make a beeline for her dad to make sure he hadn’t disappeared.
When she saw him still sitting there, she broke into a huge grin.
“All clean! Daddy, pick me up!”
She held her arms out, and Dennis scooped her up with ease.
