Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 414

About twenty minutes later, the car finally pulled up outside Camila Davis’s townhouse complex.

As she stepped out, Camila’s mind drifted back to the last time Lillian woke up from a nap—how off she’d seemed afterwards.

Worried, she turned to Dennis Williams. “Mr. Williams, do you have plans or work this afternoon? If you’re free, could I ask you to come up for a cup of coffee?”

Dennis saw right through her. “You’re concerned Lillian might have a hard time waking up again, aren’t you?”

She nodded, not bothering to deny it. “Last time she had a fever, things got… weird when she woke up. I just—well, I’d feel better if you were around. But it’s totally fine if you’re busy.”

Thinking about everything that had happened today, Camila felt pretty embarrassed. Dennis always seemed so polished and untouchable, like a modern-day Greek god way above her everyday mess.

But here he was, seeing her at her most frazzled.

Dennis studied her for a second, then said, “I set aside my whole afternoon for Lillian. I don’t have any other plans.”

Camila’s face instantly lit up. Relief washed over her. “Thank you so much!”

He didn’t say anything more, just took a step closer, then bent down and said softly, “Let me carry her.”

Before Camila could respond, the space between them disappeared. Dennis’s presence was so overwhelming, her heart skipped a beat.

The next thing she knew, Lillian was in his arms, and Dennis was already heading toward the building. Camila’s anxious thoughts faded away as she hurried to catch up.

When they got inside, Lillian was still sound asleep. Camila directed Dennis to put her in her bedroom, then poured him a cup of coffee and invited him to take a seat in the living room.

They’d barely started chatting when the doorbell rang.

Susan, her neighbor, went to answer it.

Standing outside was Aaron, carrying two framed pieces of art. “Ms. Davis, I picked up Lillian’s painting from the gallery, and they mentioned there was another piece for you, so I brought both.”

“Oh…” Camila blinked, then remembered which painting Aaron meant. Suddenly, she felt awkward. “You went to a lot of trouble. Thanks so much.”

With Dennis right there, Camila felt a little self-conscious.

Dennis arched an eyebrow. “You bought another one?”

Caught, Camila hesitated. But she’d planned to give it to him anyway. Why not just go for it now?

“Yeah, I did,” she admitted. “Want to see it?”
