Chapter 26
Soon, she relaxed and drifted into sleep while leaning against him.
He knew where she lived.
Yesterday, he watched as she entered Patricia’s villa, left, and stayed in the hotel.
He bent down slightly, picked her up, and walked out while hooking her handbag over one finger.
She slept fitfully.
She was trapped in an endless cycle of nightmares. Either it was Wilfred, who sent her to jail and had her tortured, or it was Helena, who tied her up. She was forced to watch as Wilfred undressed Helena before they kissed, touched, and had sex…
Haunted by mixed feelings, including pain, sadness, fury, and lust, she found it hard to breathe.
Her whole body was drenched in sweat, and she was swallowed by a deep sense of desperation. As much as she wanted to struggle, the feeling of suffocation only worsened.
She wanted to shout at the top of her lungs, hoping to replace her chaotic feelings with something else–anything.
Just then, someone called out to her softly, “Josephine? Josephine…”
Jolted awake, she opened her eyes abruptly, panting heavily. Within seconds, her eyes turned red.
She immediately seized the man leaning over her and yanked him down until the full weight of his upper body pressed against her.
The heaviness felt so reassuring.
Her eyes were brimming with tears as she parted her lips and took off his silver–framed glasses with her teeth
Then she said, her voice dry, “Kiss me…”

Zachery lowered his head, his gaze fixing on Josephine’s rosy lips.
He remained motionless, though the heat in his stare intensified.
They were so close to each other, and he saw everything clearly.
Her eyes, brimming with tears, were filled with eagerness and helplessness.
She seemed like a lost child.
Swallowing, he said, “Josephine, you’re drunk.”
As he was about to stand up. Josephine looked up, her signature fragrance drifting over.
Wrapping her arms around his neck, she pulled him toward her with great force, not giving him a chance to refuse her.
As their lips met and tangled, a sudden security surged through her, which was so reassuring.

The next morning, Josephine woke up. Staring blankly at the ceiling for a moment, she was dazed.
The last thing she remembered was entering Enigma Bar. When did she get back? How?
As she sat up, she found herself in another set of clothes. Her phone was charging on the nightstand, next to a glass of water.
Rubbing her throbbing temples, she stepped into the bathroom to wash up.
Hearing something, she walked out.
“Dr. Maynard?”
Zachery was setting the table. Hearing her voice, he looked over before quickly withdrawing his gaze. “I bought some breakfast. Come eat.”
“Thank you. But… why are you here?” she asked.
“You don’t remember?”
She shook her head, looking genuinely bewildered.

Zachery’s eyes dimmed a little, his Adam’s apple slightly bobbing. Then he explained, his voice utterly soft. “I ran into you at Enigma Bar last night, so I dropped you off.”
“How do you know I was staying at this hotel?”
“You told me.”
