“Wow, intimidated much?” I ask.

“Don’t tell me that you didn’t fuck her to help yourself,” he

says to me.

I growl, much louder than he did and step forward. Tiana turns, putting a hand on my chest to stop me from attacking him.

“It’s okay, Shane,” she says, turning back to the asshole. “You’re right, I will be on the leaderboard. I come from a long line of family members whose names have been on the leaderboard. My father, both brothers, and uncle were all number one on the leaderboard. My brother Christian is currently number one on the leaderboard and he’s been there for three semesters. My mother was the first female Alpha to get her name on the leaderboard. Your last name was Locke, right? I’m pretty sure I’ve never heard of a Locke on the leaderboard,” she says, making me smile. That’s the fire I’m used to.

Cole, another Alpha who boarded with Tiana, snorts. “Maybe you should pick your battles, Dude, and wait to get to know people before you make assumptions.”

“You can’t tell me I’m the only one who thinks that she’s already got a head start on all of us because of who she is,” Nicholas says, looking around. I can tell the two females who joined with him are leaning toward his way of thinking. The last guy looks like he’s on the fence, intelligently waiting until he can at least see Tiana in action.

“Of course she has a head start, moron. She’s been trained by instructors and the leaders of our packs since she was born. That doesn’t mean that she’s going to be given a free ride like you’re suggesting. If you were worth your Alpha title, like I am, you’d realize that she’s the person you need to raise your standard to, because Tiana doesn’t fail,” I say.

“It got awfully tense in here,” Luna Caroline says, walking in with drinks. “Something we need to know?”

Penny walks in behind her with another tray of drinks, looking around the room and assessing the situation the way I’ve seen Enya do since her return from the Academy

I raise an eyebrow at Nicholas, daring him to say something.

“There’s no problem,” he says, taking his drink off the tray and walking away.

Caroline has Tiana’s drink, and she makes sure to give everyone else theirs before giving T hers.

“You okay?” she asks softly.

“Yeah. I should have expected it, but I didn’t,” she says.

I rest my hand on her lower back, silently letting her know that I’m here, supporting her.

“You know how to stop rumors, right?” Luna Caroline says, her voice remaining low.

“How?”

“Prove them wrong,” she says, winking at Tiana before tucking the tray under her arm and walking off with Penny.

“So, how high IS the standard I have to set for myself,” Cole says, smiling as he walks over.
