Chapter 14

Shane

I’ve got to hand it to Tiana. She doesn’t take shit from anyone. I really like that about her. I also realize that her taunt to Nicholas could have been tossed at any of us. There are seven Alpha heirs here and not one of us stepped forward to ride The Beast.

I glance at Cole and Justin, the two heirs I’ve become friends with. I can see that they, too, realize we need to step it up quickly.

When Dane asks Tiana which instructor she wants to go against, I watch her look around, assessing all of them. Ryan waggles his eyebrows at her. She grins, but skips past him, barely glancing at Alpha Benjamin who is the oldest Alpha here, quickly assessing Alpha Ezra and dismissing him, then looking between Alpha Jackson and Alpha Dane. Both of them are older Alphas, but still young enough to be full–time instructors at the Academy.

“Both of you teach this class regularly, right?” she asks them.

“That’s right,” they say. Dane is staring at her as if willing her to choose him.

“Well, I’m not going to get better by choosing someone who has as little experience as I do,” she begins, looking between them. Finally, she sighs.

“Dane.”

The word is barely out of her mouth before Dane is fist pumping the air. “YES!”

“I want my turn, young Alpha,” Alpha Jackson says.

“If she’s anything like her mother, we’ll all get a turn,” Ryan says, grinning at his sister.

“I am my mother’s daughter,” she says haughtily.

“Yeah, you are. Good thing I taught Christina everything she knows,” Dane says, grinning at her.

They get to the starting lineup, Tiana on the left and Alpha Dane on the right. Ryan steps between them. “Human form. Sebi?”

“Yes.”

He nods. “Ready?”

She looks at the daunting beast, taking a deep breath and settling herself. Then she nods. “Ready.”

“On your mark. Get Set. GO!” Ryan shouts.

The two of them bolt up the incline of the Beast. Dane leaps, grabbing the bar that you have to use your upper body strength to lift, like climbing a ladder in the air with only your body’s momentum to move the bar up one step at a time.

“Come on, T!” I yell, cheering her on.

Everyone around us begins cheering for her, watching as she climbs the ladder before leaping onto the first platform. She’s not as fast as Dane, but she makes it up on the first try. From here, we lose sight of her as she races into a section of the Beast that none of us can see.

“Come on, Sebi! Kick Dane’s ass!” Ryan yells.

I see Dane rush past an opening on the right side, then wait several seconds before Tiana passes her opening on the left.

“Keep going, T!” I shout.

We can hear a lot of noise from down here, but we can’t see what’s going on.

Suddenly, I hear Tiana yelp, and a moment later her body comes flying off the Beast, falling to the ground in a heap.

“SEBASTIANA!” I yell, at the same moment that Ryan does. Both of us sprint to where she’s lying on the ground, not moving.

“Shit, that fucking hurt,” she moans, not moving out of the ball that she’s curled into.

“Sebi, where did you get hit?” Alpha Dane asks, rushing over.

“Side,” she says and I can tell that she’s struggling to catch her breath.
