The Beautiful Wife Of Mr Rowland novel Chapter 10

Emily stood in front of the large office door with her heart pounding.

She had been called in by Mr. Rowland—Denovon—just immediately the meeting ended.

She took a deep breath, straightened her blouse, and knocked.

“Come in,” his deep voice said from inside. She opened the door and stepped in slowly.

The office was grand, elegant, and too quiet.

Denovon sat behind a wide black desk, leaning back in his chair, one arm resting on the armrest while the other held a pen he gently rolled between his fingers.

He looked up at her with calm, unreadable eyes. Emily cleared her throat and tried to sound professional.

“Mr. Rowland.”

He didn’t reply right away. Just stared for a few seconds before gesturing toward the chair in front of him. “Sit.”

She walked over and sat, legs crossed, hands folded tightly on her lap. Denovon leaned forward, placing the pen down.

“You’re nervous.”

“I’m not,” Emily lied quickly.

He smirked slightly. “You’re a terrible liar.” Emily’s cheeks flushed. She looked away, pressing her lips together.

“I wanted to call you in,” he said calmly, “because your presentation today was… well done.” Her eyes widened slightly.

“Thank you, sir.” He studied her again.

“But that’s not the only reason.” Her stomach twisted a little. “I already knew you worked here the day we met,” he said casually. “You mentioned it on the blind date. So yes, I wasn’t surprised to see you this morning.”

Emily looked down. “I didn’t know you were… the new chairman.”

“You weren’t supposed to,” he replied with a light shrug. “I wanted to see how you act when you don’t know who I am.”

“And did I pass your test?” she asked, her voice a bit sharper than intended.

Denovon leaned back again, that half-smile tugging at the corner of his lips.

“More than pass.” Emily shifted in her seat, unsure of what to say next.

There was silence for a few seconds. Then he spoke again—soft but firm.

“Emily.” She looked up at him.

“I don’t know what happened to you before now… but I see it in your eyes. You’ve been hurt.” She blinked quickly, fighting the lump in her throat.

“But here’s what I want you to know.” His voice was calm. Steady. Serious.

“Don’t let pain distract you from your purpose. You’re better than that.” Emily swallowed hard.

“You can keep pretending to smile at work… or you can choose to rise,” he said. Her eyes met his, and for the first time, she saw something in them—respect. And something else… something deeper.
