When Winona saw Mayo's name flashing on her phone, she didn't answer.
They weren't friends. In fact, they barely knew each other. There was no reason to pick up.
But Mayo kept calling. Again and again, his calls interrupted her drive, the phone buzzing insistently on the passenger seat.
Finally, annoyed, Winona pulled over to the curb, put the car in park, and picked up. "Hello, Mr. Johnston. Is there something you need?"
On the other end, Mayo's tone was warm, almost too friendly. "Winona, it's been ages. I was starting to think you didn't remember me."
"Please, Mr. Johnston, if there's something you want, just say it. If not, I'll hang up." Her voice was cool, polite, and distant.
Mayo fell silent.
Sitting beside him, Claud nudged Mayo with his elbow, smirking. "So? Did she ask you if Julian put you up to this? Did she want to know when Julian wants her back with the Nicholson family?"
Mayo shook his head.
"Mr. Johnston? Are you still there? If not, I'm hanging up now."
"Wait," Mayo said, biting back his hesitation. "Winona, do you remember last year when my niece broke out in that rash—looked like a heat rash, but the dermatologist couldn't figure it out? You gave me some of your homemade ointment, and after I used it, she cleared up overnight. Well, she's got it again. Do you… do you have any more of that cream?"
Winona paused. She hadn't wanted anything to do with Mayo.
But when he mentioned his niece… kids were innocent, after all.
The ointment was an old family recipe—her grandmother's, made from herbs simmered for hours in their kitchen, an age-old remedy for irritated skin. It worked wonders, and best of all, it was safe.
"Where are you?" Winona's voice softened, despite herself. "I'll bring you some."
"I could come to you," Mayo offered, a little too quickly.
"No need. Just tell me where you are—I'll bring it." Winona wasn't about to let anyone connected to Julian know where she lived.
"Thank you. I'm at the Laurel Hill Lounge. When can you get here?" There was uncertainty in Mayo's voice.
