A group of people sneered at Winona.
Stunned, Winona turned to Mayo. "Mayo, you're the one who asked me to bring ointment for your brother's child!"
Mayo hesitated, lips pressed together.
Guilt pricked his conscience. Still, after all the trouble Winona had caused Julian and Miss Shepherd, maybe it was time she learned her lesson.
When Mayo said nothing, Winona let out a cold, bitter laugh. "I see. Having me bring medicine for your brother's child was just a pretense. The real reason you lured me here was to ambush me—and you're all in on it, aren't you?"
"Enough with the chatter!" Mackenzie snapped, her voice sharp with malice. "I've already had someone jam the security cameras in this block—no one's watching. Stuff her in a sack, dump her in some abandoned building, and let a bunch of vagrants have their way with her. She's so good at seducing men with dirty tricks—let's see how she likes it when she gets a taste of her own medicine!"
"That's going too far," Xander protested, brow furrowing. "That's a crime! Whatever she's done, nothing justifies that kind of irreversible harm. If you really want to punish her, take her phone, drop her off a thousand miles from here with just enough cash to fend for herself, and let her figure things out. But getting strangers involved is wrong."
For a moment, Xander seemed to stand on the side of justice and conscience. Yet, his sense of right and wrong only extended to those he deemed worthy. To someone like Winona, he just thought Mackenzie's idea was excessive, not that punishment itself was wrong.
"Are you police? Or judges?" Winona's eyes swept over the group, her voice icy calm.
"We're neither," Xander replied, stepping forward, "but do you really think the police or a judge could keep you in check? Felly and Julian are happy together, a perfect match, and yet you keep trying to destroy what they have. For a woman like you, don't you think you deserve whatever comes your way?"
"Julian is my husband," Winona said, every word deliberate.
