Julian couldn't help but laugh at himself. "Yeah, I know. Even if I'd given Winona five grand a month for living expenses, things wouldn't have ended up like this."
"I'm sorry, sir. I shouldn't have said that," Sue replied quietly.
"You weren't wrong."
Sue hesitated, glancing at the little girl in her arms. "I'll take the princess upstairs to rest now, okay?"
"Go ahead." Left alone on the sofa, Julian made no move to sleep.
His thoughts drifted back to Felicity's grandmother's birthday dinner. Winona had once told him a story: seven years ago, his grandfather, enjoying his retirement, had developed a herbal medicine for male impotence. Winona claimed that he had accidentally taken this medicine and had no way to deal with its effects.
And Winona—she'd used her own body to save his life. At least, that's what she said.
But what Julian remembered was far less clear. He'd never known who had set him up, only that he'd ingested something by mistake. His body had burned with fever, his head swimming, and everything after that blurred together. Was it real or was it a dream? He couldn't tell. When he finally woke, Winona was lying naked beside him.
That's when he decided it was all a setup—Winona's trap.
From that moment on, he'd hated her. For years, he believed Winona had used underhanded means to force him into marriage.
Even after Winona explained everything at Felicity's grandmother's party, he'd still thought she was just accusing him to cover her own schemes. But now, for reasons he couldn't explain, Julian found himself doubting everything.
There were only three or four days left until the divorce hearing.
No one knew what that day would bring.
Late that night, Julian pulled out his phone and called his grandfather, who lived quietly in the mountains and rarely saw anyone.
It took a while for the old man to pick up—he'd clearly been asleep. The gruff voice on the other end snapped, "You finally remember you have a grandfather? Calling me in the middle of the night—my sleep's bad enough as it is. Are you trying to keep me up all night? What on earth is so urgent?"
