Winona was a little stunned.
"There's no rule that says just because I'm friends with Felicity, I can't also be friends with Mia, Zane, and a seventy-two-year-old beauty, right? If you let me be your friend, next time you have a minor ailment, you can just use my name at the hospital. It'll make things much more convenient."
"My grandmother wants revenge on the Shepherd family," Winona stated plainly.
"Can I sit that out? And after she gets her revenge and the Shepherds are destitute, would you allow me to make sure they have a bowl of rice to eat? Just plain rice, nothing fancy," Xander asked.
Winona let out a small laugh.
Her tone was like that of a wronged child who had finally found understanding. "As long as you don't help the Shepherds try to stop my grandmother from getting her revenge, and as long as you don't hate me for being ruthless with them, then you can be our family's friend. Our dining companion."
"Deal!"
"Deal!"
Zane looked up at Xander. "Mr. Xander, can you play shooting games with me later?"
"Of course!"
"Can you beat me?"
"Since your name is Zane, I have a feeling I probably can't…"
"Then you can't cry when you lose!"
"Absolutely not!"
"Okay… Mr. McCarthy, you're my friend now," Zane declared with an air of great importance.
"Xan… Dr. McCarthy, even though I think you're broke and too old, I suppose it doesn't stop us from being regular friends," Mia said, looking at Xander with a haughty expression.
"I'll work harder, okay? If I ever manage to match Miss Summers' financial standards and somehow get younger, I'll come and propose to the lovely Mia. How does that sound?" Xander asked, wiping an imaginary bead of sweat from his forehead.
"I'm a bonafide heiress now. You'll probably have to wait in a very long line."
