Winona realized the Shepherds were now using unknown numbers to reach her. And every time, she fell for it.
On the other end of the line, Henrietta was screaming, her voice cracking with rage. "I raised you for sixteen years! I fed you, I cleaned up after you! They say the bond of raising a child is stronger than the bond of birth! You owe me a debt you could never repay in ten lifetimes, and you have the nerve to demand a billion dollars from Felly? Why don't you just die? I hope you get hit by a car, I hope you get gang-raped! Just go die right now!"
Henrietta was panting, out of breath from her tirade.
Winona's voice was placid. "Are you finished? In that case, let me take this opportunity to inform you that Felicity needs to repay the billion-plus dollars she owes me as soon as possible. If she can't, she'll go to prison." With that, Winona hung up.
The moment she ended the call, Xander's phone rang.
He gave a wry smile. He didn't even have to look to know it was Henrietta.
Glancing at Winona, Xander asked, "Do you mind if I take this?"
"You have every right to," Winona said gently.
Xander answered the call. "Mrs. Shepherd, is something wrong?"
"Xander, I've watched you grow up. You know how hard Felly has worked. In high school, she would study in the library until her ankles were swollen from the cold. She worked so hard to get into a good university, and even though our family gave her plenty of money, she always worked part-time. She would even bring food from home every week to give to her less fortunate classmates."
Xander couldn't help but let out a soft snort of derision.
"What are you laughing at?" Henrietta demanded.
Xander wanted to say, *Your family is kind to the entire world, except for the girl you raised for sixteen years. Couldn't you have shown her even an ounce of warmth? Did you really have to strip away every bit of the life you gave her?*
But he said nothing.
