Winona's drowsiness vanished in an instant, as if it had never existed.
Her voice trembled. "Tiana… Where are you? Tell me what happened, sweetheart—please, talk to Mommy!"
"I… I'm at the hospital. Daddy's taking care of Miss Felly, but I can't find them. I don't know how to get home… w-w-wah…" Tiana's voice dissolved into tears.
Winona was speechless.
She'd promised herself, over and over, that she would never see Tiana again in this life.
But now her mind was blank, her heart pounding so hard it felt like it might burst.
"Tell Mommy which hospital you're at. Stay right where you are—don't move, do you hear me? Mommy's coming to get you. Is there an adult nearby? Give the phone to them, please." Winona scrambled out of bed, pulling on her clothes in a rush. She snatched up her car keys and bolted out the door.
Tiana handed the phone to a young nurse standing nearby.
The nurse immediately spoke into the phone, her tone sharp. "What kind of parent leaves a four- or five-year-old alone at the ER nurses' station? This is outrageous!"
"I'm on my way—don't let her out of your sight!" Winona barely paused as she dashed downstairs.
She drove like a woman possessed, desperate to reach the hospital as fast as humanly possible.
If she could have flown there, she would have.
Meanwhile, Julian had just found Tiana.
He swept the frightened, tear-streaked little girl into his arms, his voice hoarse with guilt. "Tiana, sweetheart, tell Daddy—how did you end up here in the hospital? What happened?"
"Daddy, you still love me, right? You and Miss Felly—you do love me, don't you?" Tiana looked up at him, her face streaked with tears but hopeful, managing a smile.
Julian nodded vigorously. "Of course we love you. You mean the world to us—you and Miss Felly both."
