But before Louis could react, the leader in black wheeled on him and snapped, “I’m warning you—call the cops, and your little master is dead!”
With that chilling threat hanging in the air, the kidnappers dragged the four children over and shoved them into a waiting van.
Louis was shaking so hard he could barely stand.
Just before climbing into the van, Ethan caught Louis’s eye and gave him a quick wink.
Louis immediately understood—Ethan’s words earlier had been meant to protect him.
The realization hit Louis so hard that he burst into tears, utterly overwhelmed.
But as the van sped away, carrying the children further and further, Louis’s sobs grew louder. “Master Ethan, I promise—I’ll save you all…”
He fumbled for his phone and dialed Mrs. Bennett’s number.
Rebecca’s anxious voice came through at once: “Louis? What’s wrong? The boys made it home, didn’t they?”
Louis could barely get the words out, his voice thick with tears. “Ma’am, something terrible’s happened… the boys—they’ve been taken. Some men grabbed them…”
Rebecca’s heart clenched. For a moment, the world seemed to spin beneath her feet.
“What? Kidnapped? How did this happen?”
Louis quickly recounted everything, his voice trembling.
Rebecca forced herself to stay calm. Panic would only make things worse. She needed to think, to act.
“Louis, call the police right now. I’m heading home this minute.”
As soon as the call ended, Louis moved to do as she said—but then he remembered the kidnappers’ threat. If he called the police, they’d kill the boys. The fear gripped him so tightly that he didn’t dare make the call.
