THE DIVORCE GAMBIT From Dumped Wife to CEO's Forever novel Chapter 284

The atmosphere was a little tense.

After all, this was nothing more than a rebranded copy of "Strolling Down Wall Street."

Beatrice reached out for the book, almost taking it, but at the last second she pulled her hand back. “Why bother looking? I can just Google the title and see what kind of book it is.”

Gordon let out a subtle sigh of relief and tucked the book away into his desk drawer.

Beatrice opened her laptop and typed in “Strolling Down Wall Street.”

It didn’t take long.

The answer popped right up.

When she saw that "Strolling Down Wall Street" was, in fact, a finance book, Beatrice rolled her eyes. “What a ridiculous name for a book on finance!”

Seriously, who comes up with these things?

Gordon cleared his throat. “Mom, was there something you wanted to talk to me about?”

“I wanted to ask how things are going between you and Catie.” Beatrice plopped herself down in front of him, resting her chin in her hands. “Gordon, I really like Catie. I mean, really like her. I’ve already decided she’s going to be my daughter-in-law!”

“Oh.” Gordon’s tone was flat.

“Oh? That’s all you have to say? I’m asking you a question! Are you pursuing Catie or not?”

“Mom,” Gordon said, his voice even and casual, as if the whole topic bored him, “don’t play matchmaker. Catie and I are just friends.”

“Do you even realize you’re setting yourself up to lose her?” Beatrice huffed, exasperated.

A faint smile flickered at the corner of Gordon’s mouth. “Chasing after her?”

“Mom, you’re overthinking it.”

He had no intention of chasing anyone.

Not now, not ever.

Beatrice gave up on arguing, her attention drifting to his bookshelf—where her eyes landed on a thick cookbook. “'The Complete Guide to Home Cooking'? Gordon, I thought you said your office was your battlefield. Huh, interesting. So quick to contradict yourself. Tell me, are you learning to cook just for Catie?”

Her eyes sparkled as if she’d uncovered some grand secret.

Gordon’s expression didn’t change. “That? It’s Skyler’s.”

He picked up a file and began leafing through it. “Mom, have you just met me? Why would I learn to cook for a girl?”

Impossible.

Absolutely impossible.

So.

The message was probably from Caitlin.

She must be texting about their dinner plans.

He opened WhatsApp right away.

Sure enough, it was a message from Caitlin. A slight smile tugged at his lips, but when he read the content, the smile faded.

Caitlin’s message read:

[Sorry, I know we were supposed to go out for dinner tomorrow, but something came up. My family wants me to go back to the Capital with them, and I probably won’t be back in Silverhaven before the holidays. Let’s reschedule, okay?]

Back to the Capital?

Not coming back before the holidays.

Gordon replied right away: [Catie, did something happen? Is there anything I can help with?]

[No, nothing happened. It’s just that my family found me, so I’m going back with them.]

The news about the Gonzales and Richards families had been all over the media lately. He hadn’t followed every detail, but reading Caitlin’s reply, he put two and two together. Gordon’s brows lifted slightly. [Congratulations to the little princess of the Gonzales and Richards families on making it home!]
