THE DIVORCE GAMBIT From Dumped Wife to CEO's Forever novel Chapter 338

Ann turned tearfully to Keira. “Grandma, even the doctors said Young Master Somerset died because they brought him to the hospital too late. How is that my fault? All I did was give them a box of Heartsteady Elixir! I never stopped the Somersets from taking him to the hospital!”

Since that night, Ann hadn’t had any contact with the Somersets. She hadn’t done anything to keep them from getting Harlan medical help.

The more she spoke, the more wronged she felt. Suddenly, she flung her arms around Tammie and sobbed, “Tammie, do you really think I’m to blame? I gave them the Heartsteady Elixir for Harlan’s sake! How was I supposed to know the Somersets would be so ignorant, so clueless they wouldn’t even take their sick child to the hospital? I swear, I never meant for any of this to happen…”

“I was only trying to help. I never wanted things to turn out like this!”

Tammie, too, felt that Ann shouldn’t shoulder all the blame. Yara and Liam, as Harlan’s parents, bore the greatest responsibility. “Come on, Ann, don’t cry. I know you didn’t do it on purpose.”

After all, the Heartsteady Elixir Ann brought wasn’t poison—it was meant to protect the heart. If Harlan’s parents had just taken him to the hospital in time, none of this would have happened.

Watching Ann, who still refused to see her own fault, Keira frowned ever so slightly. How had she never noticed all these flaws in the girl before?

She wasn’t even a third as good as Freya.

--

Three days later.

It was the day of Harlan’s funeral.

Because Harlan had been so young, the Somersets kept things quiet. Only a handful of people came to pay their respects, and Caitlin was among them.

Having lived through death once before, Caitlin valued life more than most. She’d pleaded with the Somersets more than once to take Harlan to the hospital, but in the end, it hadn’t been enough. Harlan was gone.

Even after returning from the cemetery, her heart still felt heavy.

“Woof, woof, woof—”

As soon as she stepped into the yard, Monday waddled over to greet her, his little body almost rolling with excitement.

“Sure,” Caitlin replied. “But let’s go inside, Grandpa. It’s cold out here.”

He followed her inside.

Once they were settled, Caitlin poured him a glass of water.

Only then did Fortune finally speak. “Catie, now that the holidays are over, I’m planning to go back to Silverhaven.”

Back to Silverhaven?

Caitlin immediately looked up, concerned. “Grandpa, did something upset you?”

“No, nothing at all. I’ve enjoyed my time here in the city,” Fortune said with a warm smile. “But I’m used to life in Silverhaven, and you know all my friends are there. Besides, the property management company still needs me. It’s time I headed back to work.”
