A sudden wave of anxiety crept over him.
Didn’t Skyler dislike reading finance books?
But Gordon, being Gordon, betrayed nothing. He simply held out his hand to Skyler. “Give me the book.”
“Why?” Skyler stared at him, completely lost.
“Don’t make me ask again.”
Skyler didn’t dare provoke Gordon—especially not when he could see the warning glint in his eyes. Reluctantly, he handed the book over.
The second Gordon took it, relief washed over him.
That was close.
He’d almost been found out.
After a moment, Gordon spoke again, his tone casual. “There’s something important I haven’t finished reading. I’ll lend it to you tomorrow.”
Skyler didn’t think much of it and nodded. “Alright, Uncle.”

London.
Hospital.
Ann was slowly coming to terms with the reality of her injured leg. Lying in her hospital bed, she couldn’t hide her frustration. “Mom, I heard Grandma’s planning to let Caitlin intern at Gonzales Holdings as soon as she gets back from Silverhaven. Is that true?”
Her leg was ruined, Keira didn’t care, and now—even worse—Caitlin was being handed an internship at the family company.
How was Ann supposed to swallow this?
How could anyone be so blatantly biased?
With Caitlin there to make her look good, what did she have to worry about?
Amanda continued, “Besides, I heard the company’s upper management is looking to partner with Apex. If you can secure that deal, your position at Gonzales Holdings will be unshakeable.”
“Apex?” Ann’s eyes widened. “Mom, you mean last year’s breakout gaming company? The one that shot to the top right after its IPO?”
“That’s the one,” Amanda confirmed.
“Mom, Apex is the number one gaming company in the world right now. Everyone’s fighting for a chance to work with them! You really think I can land that deal?” Ann knew she was good, but that was a tall order.
Amanda’s lips quirked up. “Do you know what kind of relationship I have with Victor Winslow—Mr. Winslow, the founder of Apex?”
“What kind of relationship?” Ann asked, curiosity piqued.
Amanda smiled. “Mr. Winslow and I were classmates at university. We were in a tight-knit group back then. He’ll be in London for a business trip soon, and I plan to host a dinner for him.”
“Mr. Winslow admires young people with intelligence and drive. You, Ann, are exactly his type. As long as we maintain this connection, there’s no way you’ll lose the Apex deal. Caitlin can’t take it from you! Honestly—do you really think a country girl like her could ever impress Mr. Winslow?”
