Hannah truly didn’t care about social status or family background.
She wasn’t like the old guard of Neon Spire—the kind of people obsessed with family pedigree and tradition. As far as she was concerned, as long as the young people were happy, that was what mattered. She was old now and didn’t want to meddle too much in their lives.
But there was one line she refused to cross: she would never allow her grandson to marry a woman of questionable character. If you’re going to marry, marry someone good, someone decent. The last thing Hannah wanted was for people to curse her name long after she was gone because of some disastrous match.
When Hannah finished speaking, Xavier straightened up, his tone earnest. “Don’t worry, Grandma. Katrina is a wonderful girl—she’s kind, she has great character, and she’s definitely not some gold-digger.”
There were plenty of things Xavier couldn’t guarantee, but this he was sure of.
He went on, “When Katrina and I started dating, she had no idea who I was. It was only later, when I told her myself, that she found out I was from the Richards family.”
Jade and Stephanie both looked stunned at that.
Stephanie could hardly believe it. “Are you serious, Xavier? You’re not pulling our leg?”
“I’m not kidding. It’s true.”
Stephanie pressed further. “So, did anything about her change after she found out your real identity?”
“Not at all,” Xavier answered, smiling. “Katrina is straightforward. When we first got together, she thought I was just some broke guy—she even treated me to things all the time. After she learned I was a Richards, she never once tried to take advantage or ask for anything.”
Jade couldn’t help but sigh in admiration. “If that’s really the case, then she sounds like a rare find.”
Hannah and Stephanie nodded along in agreement.
Then Caitlin, eyes wide with curiosity, asked, “Xavier, did you use a fake name when you started dating her?”
“Nope.” Xavier shook his head.
No fake name?
Caitlin paused, a bit surprised.
After all, the Richards family held a lot of influence in Neon Spire. Even a quick internet search on their name would turn up plenty of information.
She had a point.
Stephanie narrowed her eyes, unable to help herself. “Xavier, if you never used a fake name, how could she not know who you really were? Are you sure you weren’t being played?”
Xavier thought Katrina was in the dark about his identity, but maybe she’d known all along.
People these days could be pretty cunning. Xavier might have been a sharp businessman, but when it came to relationships, he was still a rookie.
