Gordon fixed his gaze on Skyler. “What are you doing up here?”

“My mom said you were hiding upstairs to flirt with someone—she even claimed you were whispering sweet nothings. I came to see if it was true!”

Gordon was taken aback for a second. He glanced instinctively over his shoulder toward his bedroom.

Had his sister installed a camera in his room?!

Completely oblivious to the flicker of alarm on Gordon’s face, Skyler burst out laughing. “Uncle, isn’t my mom hilarious? Someone like you, sneaking off to whisper love notes in your bedroom? That doesn’t sound like you at all!”

Gordon shot Skyler a look, his voice low. “Didn’t realize you knew me so well.”

“Of course I do! I’m your dearest, most favorite nephew!” Leaning on the doorframe, Skyler pushed himself up from the floor.

As he straightened, a small red plush toy tumbled out of his pocket.

Skyler scooped it up and held it out, grinning. “Uncle, look what I’ve got!”

Gordon glanced down.

Skyler was holding a tiny tiger plushie.

It was cute.

And fuzzy.

But definitely not something a grown man would carry.

Gordon frowned in disgust. “Seriously? A grown man like you carrying around such a childish thing?”

“This is not childish at all! It’s a lucky charm—my goddess gave it to me herself. It keeps me safe. It means a lot,” Skyler said, squinting at Gordon. “Uncle, are you jealous?”

Gordon scoffed. “Even if someone gave me something that childish, I wouldn’t want it.”
