Jennifer.
The name hung in the air. Celia was stunned for a moment before replying, "No, that's impossible. Freya, you must be mistaken about Jennifer. She grew up with me. I know her. She would never betray me!"
Celia had known Jennifer for as long as she could remember. They had grown up together, shared secrets. While their official relationship was that of mistress and servant, their bond was far deeper, like that of sisters.
Celia was certain Jennifer wasn't capable of such a thing.
Caitlin's voice remained even. "Celia, I understand how you feel, but you can't be too careful. Sometimes, the ones who betray you are the ones closest to you."
Celia still couldn't accept it. "Freya, believe me! Jennifer would never do something like that. It's not in her character. She wouldn't stoop so low! This has to be Smith's doing. Jennifer has nothing to do with it. I can swear on it!"
She could accept betrayal from anyone else.
But not Jennifer.
"Celia, don't be so quick to make promises," Caitlin said, her tone gentle, not angered by Celia's blind faith. "My suspicion isn't baseless. Do you remember when we ran into Jennifer by the elevator on my way out?"
Caitlin was observant.
In that single glance, she had sensed that something was off about Jennifer.
That was why she had looked back at her.
And what was Jennifer's reaction?
She was flustered.
Her eyes darted away, unable to meet Caitlin's gaze.
Celia paused, her mind flashing back to the scene at the elevator.
At the time, she hadn't given Jennifer's reaction a second thought.
But now that she considered it…
Jennifer had seemed different from her usual self.
Just then, Caitlin continued, "By the way, Celia, where do you usually keep the prescription?"
"In the safe," Celia answered.
"And who knows your password?"
"Jennifer knew the old one, but I just changed it a couple of days ago. No one knows the new one except me." As she said this, a thought struck her. "That's right! Jennifer doesn't even know my new password, so how could she have possibly gotten the prescription?"
It couldn't have been Jennifer.
Absolutely not.
"Do you believe Jennifer is the person who knows you best in this world?" Caitlin asked.
If Jennifer knew Celia better than anyone, then she could have easily figured out the new password based on her understanding of Celia.
"Yes," Celia said firmly. "And I'm the one who knows her best! Freya, I know what you're thinking, but I still trust Jennifer! Don't worry, Freya, I will find the person who did this!"
She was determined to find proof and clear Jennifer's name.
After talking with Caitlin for a while longer, Celia hung up and re-examined the contents of her safe.
It was true.
Only the prescription was missing.
