The Double or more Life of the Fake Heiress (Mirabella) novel Chapter 1908

Mirabella's face fell when she heard the news. She had always been wary of experimental drugs and knew the Lennox family had a treasure trove of medical research stashed away. Although Asa wasn't directly connected to the Lennox family, his partnership with Maverick suggested that Maverick might have already shared the genetic modification data with him.

As she recalled the documents Prince Lockie had sent and James’s sudden disappearance, Mirabella realized Asa’s true goal wasn’t a research collaboration; it was all about James. Using Chester and Nellie as decoys and Santos as a smokescreen, Asa had cleverly calculated that James would be with her. When all her focus was on Santos, Asa executed his plan seamlessly.

"Mira, we can't allow that drug to hit the market; it would throw the world into chaos," Nellie said, her voice full of urgency. She understood the catastrophic consequences of such out-of-time technology.

"I know." Mirabella took a deep breath, pushing down her thoughts. She pulled out her phone and called Wyatt, who was working behind the scenes.

The call connected quickly. "Ms. Mirabella, are you done there?"

Mirabella’s eyes were cold and determined. "Did you notice anything strange outside?"

Wyatt, who had set up surveillance when they entered the estate, replied swiftly, "We caught a few hitmen, but nothing else. What’s wrong?"

Mirabella guessed there must be another exit, or Wyatt would have noticed something. "Asa’s target was James. He took advantage of the chaos to abduct him," she explained, clutching her phone tightly.

"What?" Wyatt’s voice was sharp with shock. "But we didn’t see Asa or his team leave."

"He planned this all along. We’ve been tricked."

Mirabella couldn't fathom why Asa went to such lengths to take James, disregarding his identity and the powerful forces backing him. It was audaciously strange.

Wyatt clenched his fist, determination in his voice. "I'll organize a search for Asa. He couldn't have gone far in such a short time."

Despite the chaos in the region, the area wasn’t enormous. Wyatt was confident a thorough search would find him.

Mirabella nodded, about to hang up when her eyes caught a button on her coat. Pausing, an idea struck her, and she asked, "Do you have a special communicator?"

"Yes," Wyatt responded immediately. "I’ll bring it to you right away."

"Good," Mirabella said, ending the call and turning to Nellie, who looked deeply troubled. "Don’t worry too much; we haven’t hit rock bottom yet."

Nellie gave a bitter smile, guilt heavy in her voice. "If I had destroyed those documents years ago, none of this would have happened."

Mirabella was silent for a moment before looking up. "I forgot to tell you, my mentor isn’t actually dead."

Nellie was taken aback. "He's alive?"

"Yes," Mirabella said, irony in her eyes. "He was the one who founded the First Base."

"The founder wasn’t King…" Nellie began, then stopped, realization dawning. "You mean your mentor is King?"

"Yes."

Nellie staggered back, shaking her head. "I remember he sacrificed himself for you with a time reversal. How could he survive?"

"He used me as an experiment to test if time reversal was real."

Mirabella's emotions were numb, perhaps because Maverick was dead and the Stevenson family was no more, making everything else seem less significant.

Nellie struggled with this new truth, then turned to Mirabella again. "And now he…"

"He's dead," Mirabella said softly. "Morgan and his team are gone too."

Nellie stumbled, and if not for Jim’s support, she would have collapsed. It took her a long time to muster the courage to speak, her lips trembling. "They’re all gone?"

Mirabella nodded, her throat tight. "Yes."

Nellie let out a cry, unable to hold back the metallic taste in her mouth as she vomited.

"Nellie, are you okay? Don’t scare me," Jim pleaded, his eyes wide with fear as he held her, his hands shaking.

Mirabella quickly went over, checking Nellie's pulse with a furrowed brow.

"Mira, is Nellie…" Jim's voice was choked with worry, his eyes red with unshed tears.

Nellie squeezed Mirabella's hand as if to assure her, and Mirabella nodded. "It's nothing serious. She just needs rest when we get back."

Jim, perhaps oblivious to the subtle exchange, held Nellie tightly. "I don’t ask for much in life, Nellie. Just for you to be okay."

Nellie's heart ached, unable to tell him the inevitable truth. "Everything will be fine," Mirabella murmured, her hands clenched, her gaze lowered.
