She had been married to him for four years, quit her job, and dedicated herself to being the woman behind him, raising their children and caring for his parents. Since they got married, she had always used a supplementary card for Harlan’s credit card. For holidays and her birthday, Harlan would give her a gift card, and he gave her a small household allowance each month. That was it.

As the supplementary card was cut off, his message arrived: “I’m giving you one day. I don’t care where you are, get back here immediately, and you’ll have a chance to fix this.”

Nicole felt a bitter pang in her heart.

This was the man she had been blind enough to choose.

Even if he was trying to leave her with nothing, had he forgotten their son was with her? Was he going to abandon his son too?

The thought that at her age, she was still relying on the money from her mother’s death to get through this difficult time made her heart ache unbearably.

“Mom.”

Jacob came running up the mountain path.

Nicole secretly wiped away her tears, crouching down to hug her son. “Jacob, what are you doing here?”

“I came to help you, Mom. I can work.”

Jacob wiped her eyes with his small, soft hands. “Don’t cry, Mom. Jacob will grow up soon.”

Hearing her son’s thoughtful words, a wave of sorrow washed over Nicole’s heart. She held it back, not wanting him to see her sadness, and forced a smile. “Mommy’s not crying, I just got some dirt in my eye.”

“Mommy, Jacob will blow on it for you.”
