The Fifth Year of Marriage to Him novel Chapter 35

Chapter 35

Cedrick hesitated, then drove on in silence.

Lucille didn’t play any music.

Somehow, emotional turmoil made music a dangerous trapany song could unleash tears.

Better silence. She scrolled through her phone instead.

Yet, despite muting Maricela’s notes, one appeared again.

Two hands intertwined, both wearing rings. The man’s was a plain band. Maricela’s finger bore a massive large diamond ring.

The caption read: I give you a silver ring. You give me a large diamond ring. Quite the return on investment, isn’t it?

A followup note in parentheses:

(Nearly thirty and still childish about medicine?

Your coaxing is the sweetest sugar.)

This time, unlike the supermarket cart post, the comments overflowed with envy.

Lucille didn’t know what illness Maricela had. She only remembered her own injury, the agony so intense only Grandma had comforted her.

He’d visit her, each time seeming dutybound

The car reached a crossroads. Red light. Cedrick stopped, his gaze flicking to Lucille’s silent profileand the phone screen in her lap.

What are you looking at?

His brow furrowed as he reached for the phone.

Lucille pulled it away.

Nothing. Just thinkingDidn’t you say all your assets could bear my name?

She removed an carbud. Thenisn’t the money spent on that large diamond ring technically mine too?

Cedrick’s eyes turned icy. Lucille, I always thought you were reasonable. Never imagined you could be this petty.

So now she was the unreasonable one?

Weren’t those your own words?

All assets.

She had always treated it as a joke, never coveting his assets. In fact, she hadn’t even screen- recorded any of Maricela’s numerous notes as evidence. Otherwise, if she encountered a formidable spouse, wouldn’t they sue to reclaim all marital assets?

Lucille.

The traffic light turned green. He started driving again, his tone scolding, Jealousy is fine, but don’t overdo it.

Fine. Since he insisted on believing she was jealous, she couldn’t be bothered to explain. She put her earphones back on. Half an hour later, the car entered their home garage. Her ring still sat on the dashboard. She left it there and got out directly.

Trying desperately to cherish something that others saw as worthlessthat truly felt like a joke.

Her legs weren’t strong, so she couldn’t walk as fast as Cedrick. He caught up effortlessly, and they took the elevator home together.

Having worn the same clothes for two days, Cedrick must’ve been uncomfortable. He headed straight to shower upon entering. Lucille grabbed clean pajamas and went to the guest bathroom.

When she finished showering, Cedrick was already done and sitting in the guest room.

He held a book, perched on the window seat’s armchair with legs on the footrest, reading intently.

Lucille intended to ignore him until she realizedhe was holding a Porilinese Test workbook!
