Once Aydan left, Cedrick entered with two others, walking straight toward her. Or rather, Cedrick led the way direct- ly to where she sat, the other two trailing behind him..

Cedrick’s expression was stormy. Stopping before her, he demanded, “Lucille, what’s the meaning of this?”

“Meaning of what?”

Seated, Lucille looked up at the man looming over her.

“You and that dancer–what exactly is going on?”

“Show some respect. He has a name–he’s not just ‘that dancer.‘”

Lucille’s voice turned icy.

Maricela stepped forward, speaking softly. “Sister–in–law, Cedrick didn’t mean disrespect. But you’re his wife. Flirt- ing with another man at such a grand event–where would that leave Cedrick’s dignity? Today’s meeting with Mr. Wilson is crucial for him.”

Cedrick watched Lucille coldly, silently endorsing Maricela’s words.

Lucille laughed. “No. I, Lucille, have a clear conscience. I’ve done nothing to shame him. But a man who parades around with another woman despite having a wife? That’s shameful. And a woman who clings to him knowing he’s married? That’s shameful.”

Maricela’s eyes reddened as she looked at Cedrick. “Cedrick…”

“Lucille!”

Cedrick’s anger resurfaced, barely suppressed. “Must you cause a scene in public?”

Lucille lifted her gaze to meet his, smiling faintly. “Mr. Maynard, you seem mistaken. I was playing dumb to avoid you both. You approached me first. And now you’re blaming me?”

Tears welled in Maricela’s eyes as she feigned profound hurt. “Lucille, we’re not here to fight. This event matters greatly. You’ve never been to gatherings like this–we just didn’t want you to embarrass yourself…”

Lucille, How Do You Know Them?

After a whole night of hearing the same old complaints with Maricela blaming her for being an embarrassment, Lu- cille had had enough.

“Fine. If you’re so worried about shame, stay away from me. I’m feeling reckless right now–no telling what I’ll say. Since you all see me as a disgrace anyway, I’ve got nothing left to lose.”

She’d fully embraced the scorched–earth approach, wanting nothing more than for these people to leave her alone and spare her the cringe.

But Cedrick stayed. All three of them stayed, settling into seats around her.

Aydan returned with juice, took one look at the trio, and gave a resigned chuckle. With no empty seats near Lucille, he handed her the drink and sat slightly apart.

Maricela launched into a lecture about the Wilson family’s prestige, especially hyping up Thomas–mysterious helm of Wilson Corporation, MIT prodigy, president of countless international associations–piling on accolade after acco- lade.

“As the eldest son of Mr. Wilson, he’s reportedly returning to formally take over the group. When he arrives, don’t you dare embarrass us.”

Maricela shot Cedrick a look while lecturing Lucille, as if to say, See how considerate I am?

Aydan had been listening quietly but laughed here. “Since when does Mr. Wilson have an eldest son?”

“Of course you wouldn’t know. You’re just some dancer–what would you know?”

Maricela glared at him, resentment simmering. He was the one who’d exposed her lie about being Mrs. Maynard! Her investigation showed he was just some nobody dancer from the Seaston Song & Dance Troupe–no connections. Who even knew how he’d slipped into this exclusive business banquet?
