Sierra looked at the rug. “This is, what, a Biazean carpet? It’s so soft. And that chandelier–it had to be imported from Cruiseland, right? It sparkles like a pearl! And this sofa…”
Her awe was written all over her face; there was no way to hide it.
Halsey tilted her head. “I thought you said your family didn’t have much money. How do you know all this stuff?”
Sierra froze. She looked up and ran right into Halsey’s clear, sharp gaze.
Her stomach dropped as she cursed herself. She’d gotten too excited and slipped up! The whole poor–girl backstory she had spun didn’t match the way she could recognize luxury items at a glance.
Quick on her feet, Sierra forced a smile. “Oh…right. I studied interior design for a while. I saw things like this in magazines, so that’s how I recognize them.”
Halsey curved her lips in a light smile. “I was just asking. No need to get nervous.”
“Haha, I know,” Sierra muttered, trying to cover.
Just then, Jocelyn walked in. “Welcome home, Mrs. Lane.”
Halsey nodded. “Hey, Jocelyn. Can you prep one of the guest rooms? Sierra’s a classmate of mine. She’ll be staying here for a while.”
“Of course,” Jocelyn said warmly. “I’ll get it ready right away. Oh, and dinner’s done. Mr. Lane sent the menu earlier since he’s working late tonight.”
Sierra blinked. “He sends a menu even when he’s not here?”
Jocelyn chuckled. “Of course. Mr. Lane always thinks about Mrs. Lane and the baby. Usually, he’s the one cooking.”
Sierra clenched her fist under the table, her nails digging into her palm. She already knew Shaun adored Halsey, but this was on another level. He spoiled her as if she were a treasure.
“You’re so lucky,” Sierra said quietly to Halsey.
Halsey smiled. “You’ll meet someone, too. Now, go put your suitcase upstairs, then come back down for dinner.”
“Alright, I’ll go settle in.”
She returned after dropping her things off, and the two of them had dinner together. When they were finished, Halsey said, “You should get some rest.”

Sierra hesitated. “What about you?”
“I’m gonna wait for Shaun and work on a few design sketches,” Halsey replied.
Sierra nodded. “Okay, then. I’ll head upstairs.”
She disappeared, leaving Halsey to her quiet evening.
Halsey showered, changed into something comfortable, and then curled up on the sofa with her sketchpad. Pencil in hand, she let herself sink into her designs. Minutes ticked by until suddenly, around
8 PM, headlights washed through the floor–to–ceiling windows.
