Shaun’s hand fell gently over Halsey’s rounded belly. “Our baby hasn’t even had the chance to see this world yet. This can’t be happening! Halsey, wake up!”

The doctor tried to calm him down. “Mr. Lane, please, you need to stay calm. She’s really gone. I understand how you feel, but you have to let her rest in peace.”

Shaun shook his head violently. “No! She would never leave me!”

Sierra stood quietly in the shadows. Ever since Shaun had arrived, she had kept to the dark corner of the hallway, not wanting to draw attention to herself.

She didn’t need to. All she had to do was stand there and watch it all unfold.

Everything was going exactly as planned. The poison had worked. Halsey was dead.

Sierra’s gaze fell on Halsey’s lifeless body lying on the

gurney.

From the moment she was born, Halsey had always been the center of attention–a shining heiress bathed in the glow of every spotlight. She was bright, warm, and loved by everyone.

And that was exactly what Sierra hated most about her.

All her life, Sierra had been the one in the shadows, watching. She envied Halsey to no end and resented everything Halsey had. Maybe, deep down, she had wanted to be like Halsey–to live under the sun, admired and adored. But somewhere along the way, she had turned into something else, consumed by greed and jealousy.

Now, Sierra stepped onto a path she could never turn back from. But she didn’t care. She only wanted to win.

With Halsey gone, her biggest rival was finally out of the way. Her good days were about to begin.

A small, triumphant smile curved Sierra’s lips.

Shaun’s voice broke the silence. “Doctor, why was Halsey taken into surgery? She was fine before. What happened to her?”

The doctor replied solemnly, “She was poisoned.”

Poisoned?

Zada froze when she heard the word. She lifted her head slowly. “What do you mean, poisoned? How could she be poisoned?”

The doctor explained, “She was exposed to a powerful toxin, and we couldn’t save her in time. I recommend testing everything she ate or drank before the operation to determine where the poison came from.”

Zada’s voice trembled. “Her food? Before she went into surgery…she drank the chicken soup I made for her.”

Shaun turned sharply to look at her.

Zada shook her head frantically. “I swear, I made that soup myself! I would never hurt Halsey–she was my best friend!”

Shaun’s tone was cold and firm. “Doctor, take that soup and run a full test. I want to know if that’s where the poison came from.”

“Alright. I’ll do it right now.”

The doctor and two nurses hurried into the hospital room, returning moments later with the container of soup.” There’s still plenty left. I’ll take it for testing immediately.”

“Go!” Shaun barked. “I want the results as soon as possible. Bring them straight to me the moment they’re ready!”

“Okay.”
