The conviction in her voice hit him square in the chest. He straightened, jaw set with determination. “I promise. I won’t let us lose to Kayla and Payton.”

Marianna’s smile deepened, sweet and trusting. “I believe in you.”

From across the courtyard, Kayla watched Davon and Marianna lock eyes, their gazes so loaded with emotion you could practically see the connection sparking between them. She quickly snapped a photo.

She studied the image–the way their eyes held each other, that unmistakable charged intensity–and let out a low whistle. “What a lovebirds.”

Beside her, Payton caught the devious smile playing at Kayla’s lips and got that familiar sinking feeling. Someone was about to have a terrible day. “What’s got you smiling like that?”

Kayla glanced at him, considering for a moment. Instead of answering, she posed her own question. “I heard you’re pretty good with computers. I need a favor, and I’m wondering if you might be able to help me with–”

Payton’s eyes lit up instantly. ‘She’s actually asking me for help?‘ he thought.

Before she could even finish her sentence, he nodded eagerly. “Yes. Absolutely.”

Whatever it was, he’d figure it out. He had to.

Kayla frowned slightly. “That was way too quick.

“I haven’t even told you what it is yet,” she said. “You’re just going to agree like that? What if I’m asking you to do something illegal?”

The corner of Payton’s mouth curved into an almost imperceptible smile. “You wouldn’t.”

And even if she did, he wouldn’t care.
