She tried to glare at him, but the emotion in her eyes wasn’t anger. It was pain.

“I thought? No, John, I know. You cheated on me with that human girl. You hated me for giving Lia away, so you did it for revenge. I smelled her all over you. On your skin, not just your clothes.”

John sighed. “She was nothing but a friend, Sel. I told you.”

“Then explain the scent,” she snapped, eyes glimmering. “Explain why you left right after, pretending it was because I gave Lia away. Why you didn’t even think I deserved a real explanation.”

“I didn’t cheat on you, whether you believe it or not. Lily called me, sobbing and terrified. She had been raped by her boyfriend. I rushed to her rescue and found her naked. So I gave her my shirt because I didn’t think to take a jacket in my hurry. She wore that and I took her home, waited for her to change and return it to me. Then I came to you, still wearing that. That’s how her scent was on my skin.”

“I left because I was mad,” John cried, pulling her closer. “And hurt. Because despite being a goddess, you still didn’t know me enough to trust me. Because even while being a goddess, you gave our child away, instead of doing everything in your power to keep her close and protect her. You didn’t love her like a daughter. You loved her like a creation.”

My heart tightened in my chest, and I clenched my jaw.

“You had no right to decide the entire course of her life, Selene. She was my daughter, not your damned experiment. It broke me. I was upset, and yes, I didn’t like this new side of you. But I couldn’t stop loving you. I just needed to get away from you because every time I looked at you, it reminded me of our daughter. Your refusal to trust me was the final straw. I decided I didn’t want to be with you anymore.”

Selene closed her eyes, like it pained her.

“I thought you’d… you’d just go back to the sky because that’s where you truly belonged. I realised I wasn’t strong enough to love a goddess. Your emotions weren’t in tune with mine, Sel. I did what I thought was best for both of us. Just like you did what you thought was best for Lia.”
