The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 36

Brianna’s heart ached with sadness and anger. Tears welled up in her eyes and spilled down her cheeks as she shot Jotham a furious glare. Without another word, she scooped Milo into her arms and hurried back to their room.

It took a moment for Jotham to snap out of his daze. “Brianna!” he called after her, but after only a few steps, he stopped short.

He had no energy to chase after her. Instead, he turned and summoned one of the housekeepers, demanding to know what was going on.

When had Ramona moved out? And why was he the last to find out?

The staff, clearly anxious, could only tell the truth. Ramona had packed up and left several days ago. She’d insisted that Jotham was too busy and that there was no need to bother him with the details.

Jotham’s heart sank.

Several days ago? That was just after Brianna had moved in.

So, Ramona really had left because Brianna and Milo came to live here. She was sulking, punishing him in her own way.

Brianna clung to Milo in their room, crying for a whole hour. But no matter how long she waited, Jotham never came to comfort them.

Milo was miserable too. He held onto Brianna and asked in a trembling voice, “Does Dad not want us anymore? He hit me because of that mean woman…”

“Honey, your dad would never abandon us…” Brianna tried to reassure her son, but even she wasn’t sure what Jotham was thinking anymore.

He kept insisting he was only using Ramona, but every time something happened, he lost control over her—again and again. Maybe he really had started to care for Ramona.

“But Dad was so scary just now!” Milo’s voice quivered as he remembered Jotham’s anger. His face crumpled and he almost started crying again.

Brianna quickly kissed Milo’s cheek. “Don’t worry, sweetheart. As long as I’m here, I’ll never let Dad hurt you.”
