The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 41

A sly smile tugged at the corners of Ramona’s mouth. “Well, isn’t that a coincidence? I actually do know the Covington heiress. In fact, I know several people in the Covington family. The Covington Group feels as familiar to me as my own home.”

Her words settled over the room like a sudden hush. Everyone fell silent, a flicker of surprise passing through their eyes.

Ramona sounded so confident, so matter-of-fact, it was hard to tell whether she was joking or telling the truth.

Could it really be just a coincidence?

Kiki claimed to know the Covington heiress, and now Ramona claimed the same.

But the Covingtons weren’t just any family—they were Havencrest City royalty, the kind you only ever saw on the news. For a group of ordinary former classmates, having not one but two people with ties to the Covingtons was pretty hard to swallow.

And Ramona’s claim was just over-the-top. The Covington Group felt like home?

A ripple of laughter broke the tension as Kiki let out a dramatic giggle, and the rest quickly joined in.

“Ramona, do you think we’re all fools?” Kiki scoffed, shaking her head in disbelief. “You think just saying you know the Covington heiress makes it true? And if the Covington Group is like family, why are you even here at this little reunion?”

She shook her head again, almost impressed by Ramona’s audacity. Did Ramona really think anyone would buy such a wild story?

Someone couldn’t help but tease, “Ramona, seriously… What’s next, are you about to tell us you’re the long-lost Covington heiress, just found and brought back to inherit a fortune?”

With that, whatever goodwill the others might have felt toward Ramona quickly faded. People had come to the reunion to reminisce about the good old days, not to hear someone shamelessly showing off or spinning tall tales.

“Actually, you’re absolutely right,” Ramona replied, grinning sweetly and speaking with the utmost seriousness. “I am the one and only Covington heiress, set to inherit an empire.”

Her deadpan delivery sent the room into hysterics.

Tara felt a pang of embarrassment for her and tugged at Ramona’s sleeve. “Ramona, that’s enough. Let’s just drop it…”

“Drop it? Why should we?” Kiki shot back, raising her voice. “If Ramona’s so bold as to brag, she shouldn’t be afraid to prove it. Let’s settle this, right here and now. Let’s see who’s telling the truth.”

With that, Kiki whipped out her phone.

“Watch carefully. I’m calling the Covington heiress right now. Let’s see if she even knows who Ramona is.”

“If you’re lying, Ramona, I want you to drink every last drop of alcohol here tonight, then get down on your knees and apologize to me.”

Kiki lifted her chin, eyeing Ramona with open scorn. “Well? Do you dare?”

“Fine. But what if you’re the one lying?” Ramona’s voice was cool, unwavering.

“What do you want?”

Ramona fluttered her lashes, thinking a moment before answering, “I want you to record a video apologizing to the alumni group. You’ll have to admit you’ve been jealous of me for years, that you just can’t let it go, and from now on, you’ll turn over a new leaf and learn from me.”
