The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 42

“Oh, yes… that's right, I’m at the dinner right now.” Ms. Covington sounded flustered, then hurriedly added, “Sorry, the dinner’s about to start. I can’t chat any longer.”

Before Kiki could say another word, Ms. Covington hung up.

Something about it struck Kiki as odd, but she didn’t dwell on it. She quickly turned to Ramona.

“So, Ramona, care to admit you’re wrong? Ms. Covington doesn’t even know who you are!”

“Kiki, where exactly did you find this Ms. Covington? Can’t you see she’s a scammer? After all these years in college, have you lost your common sense?”

Ramona’s words were cold and sharp.

Kiki’s cheeks flushed instantly. She was rattled.

“Ramona, what are you talking about? You’re just annoyed you lost the bet, so now you’re making things up!”

The truth was, even Kiki wasn’t completely sure that the woman was really the Covington heiress.

Last week, she’d joined a private socialite group in Havencrest City. Inside, she saw this Ms. Covington—everyone treated her with utmost respect. She often handed out generous cash gifts and talked about exclusive events.

Kiki had asked around for ages before someone confirmed: this was the Covington family heiress.

So Kiki added her as a friend. But the woman insisted Kiki transfer her ten thousand dollars first, as proof she was a “true socialite.”

Kiki sent the money without a second thought. She couldn’t let herself believe she’d been conned.

Besides, the Covington heiress looked the part. Her Twitter was filled with posts flaunting a lavish lifestyle.

“The international charity gala was held at Corvonia Country Club two days ago. It’s all over the news. The Covington family’s heiress was on the guest list. Don’t tell me she forgot attending her own event?”

As Ramona finished, someone in the group quickly pulled up the news.

“It’s true! That Covington heiress was a total fake!”

There were no public photos or extra details about the real Covington heiress. She’d never appeared in the media. But the reports clearly stated: this was Benedict Covington’s daughter’s first public appearance.

Kiki’s knees buckled, and she collapsed onto the floor with a thud. It wasn’t the loss of her ten thousand that stung—it was the public humiliation, and how fast the tables had turned.

Tara, always kind-hearted, didn’t join in with the others’ mocking. Instead, she hurried over, grabbed Kiki’s phone, and tried calling Ms. Covington again.

This time, the call wouldn’t go through. Kiki had already been blocked.
