The moment Adrian heard Jayden’s name, his expression soured even further. Jayden had barely scraped through college thanks to a hefty family donation. He was nothing more than a useless loafer riding the coattails of the family name–how dare someone like that take his spot at such a prestigious event?
Sloane stood quietly off to the side, holding her invitation. Her eyes lowered, hiding the flicker of emotion beneath her lashes.
From across the room, Samantha watched Sloane’s retreating figure, jealousy burning in her chest. This was the kind of opportunity she had begged for, longed for, and never received— and now Sloane had it handed to her effortlessly. How could she accept that?
She quickly walked over to Adrian, feigning outrage. “What is going on here? You’ve always gone to the banquet. And now they’re sending Jayden? That idiot?”
Then, with a heavy sigh, she added dramatically, “Well, at least Sloane is going. I mean, we still have someone representing the family. It’s just… such a shame that you can’t be there.”
That final remark–about the limited number of seats–struck a nerve. Adrian’s gaze darkened. His eyes flicked toward the invitation in Sloane’s hand, and the pieces clicked.
“It was her,” he growled. “Sloane stole my spot.”
His fists clenched, veins bulging across the backs of his hands. “She thinks just because she got that invitation, she can waltz into the banquet like a queen? Be the star of the show? Dream
on.”
“What are you going to do?” Samantha widened her eyes, carefully crafting her concerned expression. “You can’t be reckless. This is the Houston family’s banquet we’re talking about. If something goes wrong, it’ll ruin everything–for her.”
She watched his reaction closely, hiding the satisfaction bubbling beneath her mask.
Adrian sneered. “I’m going to make sure she’s utterly humiliated.”
Samantha’s heart leapt, but she maintained her facade, “I get it, I really do. But we can’t be too obvious…”
Then, like she just remembered something, she added, “Speaking of which, it’s almost time. Shouldn’t the family be getting Sloane’s dress and jewelry ready for the banquet? If they wait too long, she’ll end up looking like a joke.”

Adrian’s lips curled into a cold, calculating smile. “Oh, don’t worry. We’ll make sure she’s… well prepared.”

Sloane didn’t return to campus right away after leaving the Rivers household. Instead, she changed her appearance and made a quiet visit to the hospital.
Two days ago, Appliepie’s surgery had been completed–today seemed like the right time to
check in.
Appliepie was the daughter of the delivery driver Boone had hit with his car.
Carrying a bouquet in one hand and a large stuffed toy in the other, Sloane stepped off the elevator.
Appliepie’s mother spotted her instantly. “You’re finally here!”
Her eyes
welled up, and she rushed over, voice thick with emotion. “Appliepie keeps asking about you. She said when she gets better, she has to thank you in person.”
Sloane offered a gentle smile. “Please don’t call me a lifesaver. Just call me Gray.”
