Sloane stood beside Madam Mathilda, forced to exchange pleasantries with an endless stream of unfamiliar faces. She wore a polite smile, but deep down, she was counting the minutes until this tiresome banquet would end.
If it hadn’t been for Samantha and Adrian both fighting for a spot at this event, she never would’ve accepted Madam Mathilda’s invitation. In her opinion, wasting time listening to strangers babble behind fake smiles was far less productive than staying home to refine a few more medicinal pills.
When Madam Mathilda became preoccupied with chatting up a new group, Sloane quietly slipped away.
Her looks, combined with her status as Lucas’s fiancée, naturally drew attention wherever she went. But she paid it no mind and helped herself to a few pastries before heading to a quiet corner to enjoy them in peace.
Just then, a girl in a white gown with a glass of red wine in hand came walking toward her.
“Hi, Sloane…” the girl greeted, only to suddenly stumble in her high heels. She flailed forward with an exaggerated yelp, “Look out!”
It all happened in a flash–the girl lunging straight at Sloane like she’d lost her balance.
But Sloane calmly stepped back and pivoted smoothly to the side. The movement was fluid as water, her plate of desserts completely undisturbed–she didn’t even drop a single crumb.
“Aahhh!” came a shriek.
The girl in the white dress crashed headfirst into a table loaded with wine bottles. With a loud crash, glasses shattered on the floor, and red wine splattered across the carpet like blood. A pungent scent filled the air as the expensive liquor soaked her dress and scattered broken glass everywhere.
Guests nearby jumped back with startled cries.
The girl was sprawled across the table, her hair a mess, her face humiliated. Her dress was drenched in wine, speckled with shards of glass. She struggled to lift her head, glaring at Sloane with hatred and disbelief.
Because she knew–she had planned this fall.
She’d calculated everything–the angle, the force, the distance. Even if Sloane dodged, she

should’ve been able to land it cleanly without actually crashing.
But at the last moment, someone had tripped her.

There was no one else close enough–just her and Sloane. Who else could it have been?
Sloane stood a short distance away, calm and collected, as if the scene before her had nothing to do with her. She lifted a brow and casually remarked, “What happened? You should really watch your step.”
“You-“The girl trembled with fury, raising a trembling finger to point at Sloane. She opened her mouth to shout, “It was her-!”
But just then, the Houston family’s butler arrived with impeccable timing, cutting her off. “Are you alright, miss?”
