Marshall was seething with resentment, but there was nothing he could do. The main branch of the Rivers family had always looked down on their side of the family. Now that Rivers Group was in crisis, not only were they refusing to help, they were even trying to take advantage of the situation, snatching Sloane, their most promising asset, to fully distance themselves from him.
Of course Sloane saw right through the main branch’s intentions. Five years ago, when Marshall had thrown her into a mental hospital, none of them had lifted a finger. But now that she had value again, they were all coming out of the woodwork. She had no interest in getting involved with the main family, much less in maintaining ties with the Rivers name.
She used her studies as an excuse and turned down their invitation.
While Marshall was buried in the chaos of the company’s collapse, Samantha just happened to run straight into trouble.
Due to her hand injury, she’d performed terribly in the Master’s Apprentice Competition and had ultimately been eliminated.
Feeling dejected, Samantha returned home–only to find the house in complete disarray. Marshall was yelling into the phone, his face dark with rage. The mounting crisis at Rivers Group had clearly pushed him past the brink of reason.
Samantha crept over cautiously, trying to offer comfort. “Dad, please don’t worry too much. There’s always a way out of things…”
“Way out? What way out?” Marshall cut her off with a roar, his voice filled with fury and despair. “Rivers Group is finished! Do you have any idea how much debt we’re drowning in? Do you know we’re about to lose everything?”
Startled by his outburst, Samantha instinctively took a step back. Her eyes welled up. “Dad, I was only trying to help…”
“Help? What help could you possibly offer?” Marshall sneered, his voice sharp and mocking. “You couldn’t even make it past the Apprentice Competition. What use are you? Look at Sloane, she got into Blackhawk and now she’s engaged to Lucas. If

you had even half her ability, the Rivers family wouldn’t have ended up like this!”
The mention of Sloane made Samantha’s jealousy flare, raw and bitter. She clenched her teeth and muttered, “Dad, Sloane doesn’t care about the Rivers family at all. Counting on her to help is nothing but wishful thinking.”
Marshall’s face darkened even more. He slammed his hand on the table and shouted, “Shut up! If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t have forced her into that mental hospital in the first place! Maybe she wouldn’t be so cold to us now! Well, congratulations, the Rivers family is done. You happy now?”
When Helen heard that Samantha had been eliminated, she was equally disappointed. “Samantha, we’ve poured so much into you all these years. But lately, all you’ve done is fail again and again. It’s been a huge letdown.”
Samantha was already upset about losing the competition. Now they were all piling on. She suddenly lifted her head, eyes burning with resentment and frustration. “Why are you putting all the blame on me? Wasn’t it your idea to force Sloane into that hospital? And now that everything’s gone to hell, you’re blaming me? Why don’t you blame yourselves, for being useless, for running the company into the ground!”
Marshall was stunned silent for a moment, then exploded. “You dare talk to me like that? You ungrateful brat!”
Helen’s face turned pale with fury. She pointed a shaking finger at Samantha’s face. “You heartless thing! We raised you all these years, and this is how you repay us? If we’d known how worthless you’d turn out, we would’ve sent you back from the start!”
