Lucas was in a fullblown panic. He quickly pulled out the feverreducing roots he’d prepared earlier, smashed them against a rock, and squeezed out the juice to feed to Sloane. Then, using a large lotus leaf filled with warm water, he soaked a cloth and began cooling her downover and over again.

But after several hours, her fever still hadn’t gone down.

In fact, it had only worsened. Watching her murmur incoherently in her unconscious state, Lucas gritted his teeth, tore off his shirt, and pulled her tightly into his arms, using his own body to bring her temperature down.

His skin trembled against the cold night air, but he didn’t care.

He just held her tighter.

Her body was burning up, like a furnace. His body heat was the only thing keeping hers from climbing even higher.

Lucas’s heart pounded violently. He pressed his palm gently to her forehead, feeling the searing heat beneath her skin; pain clawed at his chest.

Sloane, you have to pull throughhe whispered hoarsely, his voice catching in his throat.

He rested her head carefully on his shoulder, both arms wrapped tightly around her.

Lucas had never believed in gods or prayers his entire lifebut in that moment, he silently begged any higher power listening to let Sloane wake up safe and sound.

Time crawled by. His limbs had long gone numb from the cold, but he refused to let go of her. Not even for a second. Eventually, her fevered heat began to ease; her breathing steadied.

Hope sparked in his eyes. He continued cooling her down, refusing to let

exhaustion win.

By the second half of the night, the fever finally broke. Sloane drifted into a calm, restful sleep.

Her consciousness slowly surfaced from the haze. Her eyelids felt like they were weighted with a thousand pounds.

She managed to twitch her fingers, her entire body ached like it had been crushed, and her arm throbbed with waves of sharp pain. She couldn’t help but gasp, her brows knitting tightly together.

UghSloane’s voice was faint, barely audible.

The small movement startled Lucas, who had dozed off nearby. His head jerked up, eyes still clouded with fatigue and alertness. But the moment he saw her eyes flutter open, his entire expression softened.

Sloane, you’re awake!Lucas’s voice cracked with emotion. He quickly sat upright and reached out to steady her by the shoulders. Don’t move too muchyour wound was just dressed last night.

Her gaze was a little hazy. She looked at Lucas’s bare upper bodythen glanced down and realized she was wearing his shirt.

Following her line of sight, Lucas looked down at himself tooshirtlessand explained, Your clothes were torn beyond use, so I gave you mine to wear.

He quickly added, Don’t worry, I had my eyes closed the whole time. I didn’t see anything.

His voice trailed off, growing quieter the more he spoke.

Worried she’d be angry, Lucas sneaked a glance at heronly to find Sloane surprisingly calm. Her face hadn’t even turned red.

It was a special situation. I understand,” Sloane said gently, actually trying to reassure him. I don’t mind. You don’t need to worry about it.
