Mason put on a pained, sorrowful expression. “Now that my brother’s in a coma and the company’s leaderless, everyone’s panicking. As a member of the Hawthorne family, it’s my duty to step in and take charge.”
Some of the shareholders nodded in agreement at his words.
“Mr. Mason’s right! The company’s a mess and Mr. Hawthorne’s not around. Someone’s got to take control!”
“Andrew, enough already! Mr. Mason is from the Hawthorne family. It makes perfect sense for him to take over!”
Andrew found himself backed into a corner by the shareholders, cold sweat trickling down his forehead. He knew Mason had come prepared this time. The shareholders had clearly been swayed. No matter how hard he tried to argue, it was pointless.
With things going exactly as planned, Mason officially returned to the company. The first thing he decided to do was scrap the collaboration with Peak Corp.
When Andrew heard Mason’s decision, his face instantly turned pale. He sprang to his feet, voice laced with fury. “Mr. Mason, you can’t do this! That project was personally overseen by Mr. Hawthorne. We’ve already invested massive resources and time. Pulling out now would be a catastrophic loss for the company!”
Mason leaned back in the chair at the head of the table, fingers interlocked, a smug smile playing on his lips.
“Andrew, you’re just an assistant,” he said lazily. “Who are you to question my decisions? I’m in charge now. If I say we’re pulling out, then we’re pulling out.”
Andrew clenched his fists, forcing himself to stay calm. “Mr. Mason, the Peak Corp partnership is vital to the company’s future. Mr. Hawthorne poured his heart and soul into that deal. You can’t throw it all away over personal grudges!”
Mason narrowed his eyes, his tone mocking. “Personal grudges? Are you accusing me of putting my feelings before the company? Every decision I make is for

Hawthorne Group’s benefit. Peak Corp is too risky. With our stock plummeting and our cash flow tightening, moving forward with that deal would only worsen our crisis. As interim head of the company, it’s my job to protect our future.”
The shareholders began nodding along in agreement.
“Mr. Mason makes sense. The company’s not in any shape to take on such a big project right now.”
“Exactly. That Peak Corp deal may look good on paper, but the risks are massive. We need to play it safe for now.”
“Andrew, drop it. Mr. Mason’s doing what’s best for all of us.”
Hearing them all side with Mason left Andrew feeling powerless. He knew full well this had nothing to do with protecting the company–Mason just wanted to destroy everything Lucas had built. But with no allies and no authority, he was helpless to stop him.
Mason, seeing Andrew fall silent, smirked with satisfaction. He waved a hand. “That settles it. Andrew, go inform the departments. The Peak Corp deal is officially canceled.”
Andrew gritted his teeth. “Mr. Mason, when Mr. Hawthorne wakes up, he will absolutely hold you accountable for this.”
Mason’s expression darkened. He slammed a hand on the table, voice shrill and cutting. “Are you threatening me? You think you, a lowly assistant, have the right to threaten me? I’m running this company now. And if you keep running your mouth, don’t blame me for what happens next!”
