Oh, right. Go ahead and take Ms. Rivers upstairs to rest first,Tessa said with a cheerful smile.

Then she turned to Sloane and added, Ms. Rivers, come keep me company for a chat when you have time.

Sloane smiled and agreed, Sure.”

After Tessa left, Lucas led Sloane upstairs, feeling a little uneasy. Sorry you had to witness all that

Sloane turned her head and glanced at the red mark on his face. Her chest tightened inexplicably. It wasn’t your fault. You don’t need to apologize.

Lucas stopped outside the door to her room. Sloane looked back at him and said, “Come in. I’ll put some ointment on it for you.”

He stood up. Nothing. You should rest.

He practically fled from her room.

Outside the door, even as he tried to suppress it, Lucas couldn’t calm the pounding in his

chest.

Not yet. Just wait a little longer,he muttered to himself.

Inside the room, Sloane looked down at the ointment still on her fingertips. She rubbed her fingers together absentmindedly, her lowered eyes hiding the emotions within.
